what is the close focus

Hello, The close focus is 6.5 ft (2 m).

How common is it for these bins to lose collimation i.e. double vision? Image for left eye and right eye no longer match up after ~3weeks!

Collimation is the alignment of all the optical elements along the binocular optical axis. Originally collimation is set by adjusting the objective lens and then by making the final critical adjustments with the prism tilt screws. For someone to know that and are aware of the problem, then it has to be a fault with that particular pair of Binocular. mine are fine after a year of use. Send them back as it is clearly a manufacturing fault.

What is the best magnification/aperture for watching kids surfing out back?

Assuming your holding by hand a 6x or 8x zoom is fine for close-up at a couple of 100m or so, so that’s what I would go for, anything more powerful will make it both harder for you to find the subject when looking through dues to the small field of view and hard to get a steady picture due to natural shake of your hand. At that distance a 42mm aperture will be more than sufficient for usual daytime use, but if you wanted you could go to 30mm with good quality binocs and not notice any loss of picture. If your planning to use with a tripod the you could get 10x or even 12x zoom to get really close to the action and then I would recommend 50mm+ aperture to get more light and a wider field of view

Are these suitable for any hand size , my husband has arthritis in his hands and has large hands

These binoculars are medium size quite compact.I think they may be a bit on the small size for large hands.I use Gosky 10x42 the focusing ring is larger,and dimpled for grip.They are also lighter.
