does it need to go in a filter or can you just put hang it in the aquarium

Hi,I have a large external filter for my 5ft tank, so I put it inside the filter. As far as I'm aware, it's designed to be used in a filter, so that the water passes through it. I don't think that it would work as efficiently just dropped into the tank.I hope this has helped.

Can this be used in a U3 fluval internal filter or should i buy an external filter?

I have the fluval u4 filters and there is no room as these are large bags so I place it at the bottom of my aquarium and it works perfectly well

Why is this not suitible for salt water?

Because of how this works, salt causes the product to release the ammonia it absorbed (recharging it). So it won't absorb any in a marine tank. In fresh water it will work and when ammonia levels spike this can be pulled out, soaked in 5% salt solution, washed (in aquarium water) and dried. Then popped back in......if you're having to use this though...... Address the ammonia causing issue front end..... Too much food, over stocked, poor filtration.......etc. Good product but a reactive not a proactive one.
