The straws now arrive in plastic-free packaging, which is a big plus from an environmental point of view. However, I wasn't particularly keen on the diamond-shaped aperture in the box, which exposes a small section of 13 of the straws. I appreciate that this allows you to see the colour and pattern without opening the box, but it doesn't feel quite as hygienic as I'd expect for a food-contact product that will potentially be handled during storage and picking. Aperture aside, the straws themselves work very well in use. They're 6mm in diameter, which I find is an ideal size for soft drinks, and they're sturdy enough to last several hours in a glass that gets refilled throughout the day without becoming unusable. The traditional silver-and-white stripe design looks particularly good in my retro countertop straw dispenser, while also adding a bit of sparkle to drinks for parties and celebrations. At £5.99 for 100 paper straws, they're more expensive than I'd typically expect to pay compared with my usual brand, which offers 250 straws for just a penny more. That said, if the shiny silver stripe is the main attraction, the additional cost may be justified. Overall, these are attractive and perfectly functional paper straws with good eco-friendly credentials. I'd be happier with the packaging if the straws weren't partially exposed, but otherwise I'm pleased with them.
