Deco X50
We have a modern build 3 storey 6 bed town house, the internal walls are all stud and plasterboard. I was using a powerline system to get broadband to the harder to reach places in our house, but it was constantly dropping the signal and having issues. The deco system is much better, solid connection throughout the house. I have replaced the router from our ISP with one of the units and the others are placed one on each floor. It was very easy to set up and all the little dark patches where we used to struggle for signal are gone. The mesh is stable and seamless. I was a bit concerned I would spend £250 and still have issues, but those concerns were completely unfounded. Very happy.

Excellent whole house WiFi device let down a little by inadequate documentation
Each piece of equipment has an installation manual but what is lacking is an overall guide "How to get Whole house Wifi using TP-Link Deco". So let me explain.... There are four ways of interconnecting these units (providing 'backhaul'):- (1) WiFi (but with some loss of performance) (2) Wired, using Cat 5 or 6 cable, as a line ending at your internet provider's SoHo router. This will give excellent performance and might or might not suit your house or flat. (3) Wired, using Cat 5 or 6 cable, in a star either to your internet provider's SoHo router or to an intermediate network switch. (4) Any combination of the above methods. I used method (3), fanning out from an 8-port, 2.5Gb switch that in turn is connected to my SoHo router. A 1Gb switch would be adequate in most cases however. You can power each Deco X50 by either (a) Using the mains adapter (b) Using a power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switch or or injector. I used both methods depending on the location of the device. It will be helpful to provide a WPA pairing button to make it easy to establish a link with a printer or TV. This brings us to the next problem which is that TP-Link doesn't provide a guide to what works with what. I used injectors from one of TP-Link's other product familes. Please be aware that not all PoE switches and injectors can supply 15W or for that matter operate at 2.5Gb.

Nearly seamless transition from our old mesh system
First impressions are very positive. I set the network name and password to be the same as my old system and all my stuff connected (and there are some I think I would need external assistance to change if it didn't - e.g our heat pump, battery and solar cell systems) Units are a little bigger than I hoped and not overly attractive, but functionality seems good so far. The app walks you through initial setup which was pretty simple. Some items come up with strange names, e.g. "espressif" is a Ocean Digital Radio. App can show all devices that have connected and shows the current connections to each node. I get a ping when anything new joins the network. I've got a "medium" signal in the garage where the solar and battery wifi are, and a 'strong' signal in the summer house (approx 30m from nearest node) You can sort the client list in six ways - e.g ip address, or 2.5GHz vs 5GHz connection If you have other TP-Link devices you can control them from the Deco app - I've connected a smart plug up - again v simple.

Doesn’t connect to every ISP.
It states it will connect to any internet, what is missing here is Internet Service Provider! If you are with a start up like me with Quick Line (Yorkshire / Lincs) then you may be in trouble. Despite QL’s efforts, over 3 days I could not connect this system to the internet. TP-Link’s customer service - primarily bot then human - also tried but their input lacked precision. Attempting to use the Deco as a router replacement totally failed. Linking the Deco to the Zyxel router produced 40 kbps of streaming from an input of 200 mbps so I returned the kit to Amazon as “ not fit for purpose” . If your ISP is mainstream then you may be o.k as this is a WHICH? recommended mesh system hence my purchase. However, think carefully if you are with an ISP start up. The end result? Quick Line provided me with a mesh system for £5 a month which is equal to 4 years use of the Tp-Link system and if it goes wrong it’s their problem.

Fantastic piece of kit
This system has transformed the quality of WiFi connection in my house. I have a 500 mbps full fibre broadband package and our ISP router is installed on the ground floor in our living room. Internet speed was great if you were in the living room, but slowed down elsewhere in the house such that if I was in our study on the second floor I would be lucky to get speeds of 50 mbps and the connection on my work computer was constantly dropping out. Since installing this home mesh system I am getting speeds of between 150-300 mbps on the our second floor, and 500 Mbps on our first floor. I am thoroughly impressed with the system and would highly recommend to others looking to improve WiFi speeds throughout their house. Initial set up was not quite as straightforward forward for me as for some other reviewers as I had to reset the pods a few times before they would enter set up mood but was able to get all three up and running within 30 mins.

Good WiFi Mesh for Someone who isn't technical
I purchased this to replace my WiFi infrastructure, the deal breaker for me was that the only way you can setup the "Mesh" is to plug in one node and then use a mobile app to set it up. This also includes a creating, unless you already have it, a cloud account with TP-Link. So before getting to the technical review, if you are someone who can't tell your bit from byte and 802.11 sounds like a weird number then this might be for you. The actual setup looks extremely easy and is mobile based, so someone who isn't technical with an ISP router and a Mobile phone this would be a doodle. However, I would recommend you read the Deco App's privacy policy and the terms of service. I also noticed that there is a section in the terms of service regarding charging for services, which seems weird in what is effectively a home wireless solution with no external internet connection. From a technical standpoint the hardware appears quite good, it's got WiFi 6, wireless or wired back haul and this model supports PoE. However there are a few things of note with the time I had with it before I returned the product. You need an internet connection to set the device up, when the device starts the wired side was hunting for a DHCP server, the wireless side of the device has its own DHCP\Subnet. This is to be expected, as it'll be looking for an ISP router for a gateway and providing it's own DHCP and network to perform the WiFi client handling and it's wireless backhaul. As for DNS I can't comment, as I didn't get that far in the setup. The aforementioned deal breaker was no Web Configurator UI from the start, you have to use the Deco App first, it does appear that after the app has done its activation process you can logon to a dashboard WebUI with your cloud login. This does seem to be standard practice from other manufacturers for these "mesh" WiFi products, even though previous Access Point devices wouldn't have had that in the past. As well I just can't see why you need a cloud account on LAN device. I did read the TP-Link community forums regarding WebUI as a missing feature, and the people who wanted that feature have been repeatly asking TP-Link to build it for the last 2+ years.

Excellent range can connect neighbouring properties
Wonderful coverage and fast internet connection. This system has solved the problem I had trying to extend the already poor wifi from a Queen Anne cottage with thick stone walls to a ground floor flat next door. We put one node inside the flat, one connection to the modem on the top floor of the cottage via an ethernet cable and one in the floor below. Works a dream. The strength of the connection is four (max) bars in the flat and most of the cottage, dropping to two bars in some areas, but this is more than sufficient.
