Work well for a few years
I have been using these photocells on my Chamberlain electric gates for 11 years and they seem to last for only 3 or 4 years. As I have 2 sets of them I have to replace either the opening or closing pair about every 18 fo 24 months. I can usually get away with replacing just the emitter or receiver and as I have not built up a stock of either, I guess that they fail at an equal rate. They do have an indicator red led lamp which never seams to fail, so if it remains steady and does not pulse when you block the beam, then you know that the cells have failed unless spiders or their webs have entered and are blocking the beam.I do live within 3 miles (just) of the West coast so am probably classed as living in a harsh marine environment. Its a pity that the PCBs are not a bit more lacquer protected if that is the cause of the failures. Thankfully they are easy to change but it does involve turning off the supply to the gate power supply and disconnecting the battery to minimise risk of damage to the system.
