"Voodoo Hoodoo" is the unique variety of Creole Voodoo found in New Orleans. The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook is a rich compendium of more than 300 authentic Voodoo and Hoodoo recipes, rituals, and spells for love, justice, gambling luck, prosperity, health, and success. Cultural psychologist and root worker Denise Alvarado, who grew up in New Orleans, draws from a lifetime of recipes and spells learned from family, friends, and local practitioners. She traces the history of the African-based folk magic brought by slaves to New Orleans, and shows how it evolved over time to include influences from Native American spirituality, Catholicism, and Pentecostalism. She shares her research into folklore collections and 19th and 20th century formularies along with her own magical arts. The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook includes more than 100 spells for Banishing, Binding, Fertility, Luck, Protection, Money, and more. Alvarado introduces readers to the Pantheon of Voodoo Spirits, the Seven African Powers, and other important Loas, Prayers, Novenas, and Psalms, and much, much more, including: * Oils and Potions: Attraction Love Oil, Dream Potion, Gambler's Luck Oil, Blessing Oil * Hoodoo Powders and Gris Gris: Algier's Fast Luck Powder, Controlling Powder, Money Drawing Powder * Talismans and Candle Magic * Curses and Hexes Review: everything you need to get started in hoodoo. - This book is well written and easy to read, as well as interesting and informative. The formulary section is detailed and gives you loads of recipes for oils, floor washes, powders, baths. There is also a spell section for a wide range of purposes. I also found the section on deities, powers, and saints fascinating too. basically if you are looking to start fixing tricks, or making gris gris in an authentic but simple manner, then you won't be disappointed with this book. Review: The problem to be european - It's a good book, very well written and interesting but I've been finding discouraging the difficulties to find the ingredients if you can't find a botanic in your city. Five stars for the book but less for the ingredients. I think it's not easy for an european to get all the ingredients if is a beginner

Good starting point.
There is a lot of bad press about the authors credentials however this book is well referenced and she states all sources. This as a reference book is very good but if you want in depth information on Voodoo as a religion, you will need to look elsewhere

Great book for getting back to your roots :)
Very good book, caters to African hoodoo/voodoo practices across the diaspora from Haiti, Brazil, USA to the motherland Africa. Shows you how to make a wide range of oils and also touches some other non-African practices.

The best
This is hands down the best book on the subject I've ever read. I wasn't expecting it to be THIS thorough. I've learned more from this one book than all the other hoodoo/Voodoo books I own combined. Loads of spells and oil recipes, but also lots of interesting history lessons that I found fascinating. The best!!

Most read book and I've had it for years!
I am surprised I never wrote a review sooner but it's about time. I realized today that even years later I refer to this book again and again more than any other. As someone who's from New Orleans and who's taken a few of Ms Alvarado's classes she has become someone I trust as a teacher and a woman of high integrity. Her authenticity comes through not only in her work but in her teaching style. While I was reading some of the reviews though I unfortunately ran across some really nasty comments but I'm not surprised. There is a lot of back stabbing going on and these in particular are coming from the West coast and it makes you wonder how they can boldface claim formulas belong to a particular person yet in the same breath complain that these formulas are not authentic. Which is it? The traditional formulas from New Orleans that were passed down through families are what they are, and they certainly aren't owned or made better by someone who's not from there. These are real, honest formulas. I have to say I have had two very intense life changing experiences from her work with St. Expedite and my altar devoted to my ancestors and I attribute that to the details she gives. Her classes are much more in depth and personal as you would expect but this is an excellent reference book full of knowledge and information and I'd be at a huge loss without it. <3 <3 <3
