Excellent story of expat life on the front line in China
Randall's book tells the intriguing story of his career and life, on the front line in China.Great insights into the early days of western expats in China. So many stories! Many escapades may sound unbelievable to some, but absolutely believable for those of us that were there.Great to hear the tales about the Hash House Harriers, and life in Shanghai - rekindled many fond memories.Highly recommended reading.Well done Randall!Review by Mark Millar, still in Hong Kong, formerly in Shanghai.

It's an odyssey of one man's journey through cultural change.
First of all I was also an expat and can identify with much of what the author has gone through. But many of the points in the book are aimed at how one copes in a foreign land. For me it was a great read.

Great stories of China’s modernisation
A hard drinking, hard living romp through a turning point in history, a time and place that has all but disappeared. Through his very personal journey, the author captures the unplanned shadow of China’s modernisation that is easy to forget when one now sees the amazing cities, infrastructure, economy and power. With unique and sometimes bizarre adventures and an interesting cast of characters, the author reveals the real challenges and impact of Chinas progress. He has a powerful drive to get deeply enmeshed in the local culture and learn “how things really get done” in China.

Funny and wise snapshot of China’s recent past
Takes you back to the not-so-long-ago days in the mainland that already feel a lifetime past for those lucky enough to have lived it. An entertaining and amusing page turner that’s also snapshot of a place in time. Mr Flores delivers both the moments of humor and of wisdom with a highly readable style. Recommend this book for anyone who wants to see what it was like but also for those who need a spark to ignite their sense of daring to go out into the world.

Great read from a first time author!
The book gives the reader a fascinating look at China for those who have never been, but also serves a great fish out of water story about an American trying to come to grips with a new and foreign land. Would make for a great movie

I'm very glad I bought this book.
It is a surprisingly quick and easy read, detailing the life of an expat, who braves the Far East as a young man and succeeds, but a cost. A true cautionary tale, we follow Randall as he takes on many challenges, against the background of a raw and developing China. If you are slightest bit interested in this topic, this is your book.

How I lost my kidneys in China
This is a fantastic read cannot put the book down, everyone should read it it is so insightful and accurate of what China was like back as it was open up in the 90s. It brought flooding back to my first days in Asia in 1995 finally surfacing 20 years later. A definite must read.
