The Fortean Side of Elizabethan England
Rickman is a master of creating wonderful dark supernatural little worlds, whether its modern day or in this case Elizabethan England/Wales. His poetic prose is a joy to read, and his books are much more than just storytelling. This is the second book featuring the enigmatic figure of Dr Dee. While not a direct sequel to the Bones of Avalon, he does mention characters and Dr Dee's relationship to them from the previous book which may spoil Bones of Avalon if you read it after this book.. This is a recurring theme in Rickman's work and I have found it's best to read his books in published order to avoiding this. One minor gripe is Rickman's endings can be weak. His books have a tendency to peter out rather than crescendo. However, his writing is so good you don't really mind.

Interesting look at Tudor history
Excellent read as ever from Phil Rickman, the quality of his writing is consistent. Rather too many references to the moon as an atmospheric device, but it's not enough to stop the story being entertaining. My only other point of contention would be the fact that the real John Dee must have been a very intelligent, analytical individual (he managed to survive through some very brutal, superstitious times) whereas he seems a somewhat bumbling character in these stories. I feel Phil Rickman needs to acknowledge the sharp mind of this polymath a little more.

Love these characters
After two books I find myself a little in love with Dr Dee, in spite of Dudley's more obvious charms! The characters leap from the page and for fans of historical fiction but with a taste for thrillers and a penchant for romance, these books are a perfect read.

Engaging read...
...with John Dee back in his family’s roots back in Wales. John’s quest is complicated by a number of factors including his search for a scrying Stone.

Coldn't put it down
This was a great follow up to the Bones Of Avalon and was a real page turner I only have one complaint Please Phil write another about John Dee
O**!
Great until the end
Absorbing and intriguing until near the end then fizzled out for me. Dee just stopped being a hero. Perhaps he wasn't one but I read it as though he would be so just a bit disappointed.
