Holy Bible: English Standard Version (ESV) Anglicised Edition

Holy Bible ESV
This is a lovley thing. The binding is of black boards of a thickness rarely seen nowadays, the spine is cloth (not cheap glue) and the paper is perfectly white and the pages easily readible and nicely printed. Looks like a Bookman or Roman font type size 8-9. Yes, it is "bible" paper but by no means like the proverbial transparent medicated paper in some...It is compact though- dimensions about H 8.5" x W 5.5" x D 1.25", and does not seem at all heavy to me- often described as a Pew Bible. But would go in your personal bag easily! This Edition is a newly printed (2012) version of the 2002 ESV. For the people interested, it has its origins in the Masoretic Hebrew scriptures in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (first pub 1983), referenced to the UBS Greek translations from both sources now identical (that is the Novum Testamentum 4th ed, and the 27th Nestle-Aland texts). Remember that these later references are themselves originated in the KJV Greek translations, themselves started from the Tyndale translations...Note that there are subtle differences in bibles in general but the ethos of the compilers herein is in no doubt, and for those people who might try to dissemble, the authors achknowledge their heavenly aspirations as IDENTICAL to those of the KJV in the first sentence in this bible! So that for those people who wish to read an assured modern Bible without worrying, then delight in this one.Note that this imprint has particularly useful footnotes when textual sources and translations vary (remember Jesus spoke Aramaic) and the end of the bible contains a fascinating and useful section called "Responsiove Readings" where the reader is invited to examine popular scripture/psalms/prayer, and to read it out aloud, perhaps in groups or ecclesia. Very handy.Enjoy.

An outstanding study Bible!
This is an excellent resource for any serious student of the Bible. The ESV is now widely acknowledged as a very faithful translation of the original Hebrew and Greek texts - which is why it is increasingly being adopted by theology colleges around the UK as the standard reference version. To have this Collins anglicised edition is a great plus (I previously had the Crossway US one - excellent, but the American spelling was a minor irritation.) However it is the wealth of study aids which combine to make this so very helpful: the clear introductions to each individual book, setting it in its historical and cultural context and providing an overview of the topics addressed; the cross-references and footnotes; the maps; tables; and the comprehensive concordance and glossary are all truly outstanding. Highly recommended!

Excellent pocket Bible
I purchased this edition of the Bible because I needed a pocket version of this accurate and readable translation; it has exceeded all my expectations. This is a beautiful edition with an excellent binding, well designed tab closing, a good concordance, and although the print is small it is amazingly clear; all this comes at an extraordinarily low price.

The best translation
For me, this is the best available translation of the Bible for study purposes. It does has one or two drawbacks such as its reliance on the Masoretic Text for the Old Testament and its use of technical religious terms.Particularly useful are the coloured illustrations and maps. I also like the way it highlights important Notes, such as 'Profiles', 'Did You Know?' and 'Major Events'. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to study the Bible seriously.

Best bible ever!
I was looking for an academic bible as I am currently preparing for my CoE confirmation as an adult. This bible exceeds expectations. It is marketed as a bible for religious students but I personally think it is the perfect bible for anybody young or old wanting a thorough understanding of what the bible entails. The pictures, maps and commentary are an added bonus that makes it a very clear and enjoyable read.

Fantastic
Apart from being huge, this is an awesome study bible - the notes are clear and comprehensive, and frequent too; the concordance at the back is really helpful, and it's really nicely laid out - brilliant study bible, fully recommended.

An abolute GEM of a Bible
I love this book. Not just because its the bible (i have many translations) but because at the bottom of each page is fascinating insights into the people, places, things and culture that are mentioned in the scriptures. It's like sitting there with not just a bible, but an encyclopedia, insight book and cross reference. And after all that... at the back are more insights into the customs of the time and answers to the most common (and some new) questions in Christianity.

Ideal
I measured the bible at 8 7/8 x 6 x 1 1/4 inches. The 9.5 x 6 x 1.7 inches Amazon gives is the dimensions of the box it comes in except the box cover is 6 3/8 inches wide instead of 6.Pros: I love this Bible. The cover is nice. It is thick, soft, seems durable, has nice texture and color. It speaks quality to me. The binding is sewn and looks sturdy. The paper is a little thin but not brittle like I feared it would be. There is some text showing through the pages but it is not sufficient to hinder reading.I like the cross references. I don't know how many other Bibles have this kind of system but there are four kinds of cross references in here. Just the text (e.g. Ps. 48:12) in the column indicates a key word or phrase repeated in that passage. The text in square brackets indicates a theme relationship. A less direct, more general theme relationship is given by introducing the text with "See" (e.g. See Gen. 9:9). Passages in the New Testament quoted from the old have a reference with "Cited from" before the text (e.g. cited from Isa. 53:7,8) and the corresponding passages in the Old Testament have "Cited" in front like for example "Cited Acts 8:32" to show they are cited in the NT.I like the ESV translation. My new youth pastor recommends it and he said it was recommended to him by several faculty in seminary. A hebrew/greek scholar at my church recommended the ESV as a good translation. The language flows well most of the time. It seeks to be readable yet distinct in its language. It doesn't use "thee" and "thou" but still uses "shall" and "behold." It's hard to find modern English equivalents for those words. "Will" works for "shall" only some of the time and "look" or "see" have not the force of "behold" which is required. Also, there are many Bible translations that all try to be the most contemporary. This one can afford to be distinguished in its language.Cons: The cover, though thick, appears to scratch easily because it is soft. It's just the price you pay for having it soft. I was tempted to feel bad like I ruined it when I nicked it but you just have to remember that the bible is better to be scratched up and read rather than in perfect condition and unread. The book is made to be used and its replaceable! The printing on the pages is slightly inconsistent. The text is a little light in areas and sometimes the darkness visibly varies within a line. The inconsistency of of the print is especially visible in the red letter. Some segments even within a red letter paragraph are quite visibly lighter than the segments around it (I checked the print on the other side of the page leaf and it was consistent). However I have not yet found a single page in this bible where I had a hard time reading the text so functionally this doesn't make a significant difference. It is just mildly distracting.
