Ignore dodgy reviews..give it a go!
I came to this film with no particular expectations and was genuinely alarmed by it!! It somehow ticks a variety of horror boxes without seeming at all cliched. I can't remember the last film I spent time watching devoting significant moments to wondering if i should be hiding my eyes (or possibly retreating behind the sofa!). Great performances, a genuinely sad story line and an assortment of nail biting twists and turns...It's at the psychological end of the horror spectrum and really documents a kind of descent into madness triggered by repressed feelings of grief for a lost loved one..er I think.Cracking and unexpected ending (won't spoil it) and the whole thing was genuinely unsettling and therefore good value!!

Disappointing
Maybe it's time for me to just not pick mum a horror movie covered in 'Stars and Electrifying reviews which don't seem to match the contents of the disc. Rave reviews, stunning comments.. but in reality..where's the horror? The acting was on par with another well known Aussie classic..Prisoner Cell Block H.. maybe slightly better..Noel Wiseman was quite good for a youngster..but the scariest moment will be when I get the electric bill and see how much I wasted on this event. Im blessed with many classic horror movies in my library, and when I read that the Director of The Exorcist told me it would scare the hell out of me.. I believed it.. then I realised..he must have been 79yrs old when the Babadook was released..so I guess things must have changed more than I thought. Very disappointed.

Don't waste your time
how some people can give this film 5 stars really shows the current state of worlds intellectual level. the acting was ok.. the kid is annoying as hell and such a cliche. The babadook looks like Danny devito's Penguin from the batman films. to be honest he would of been scarier

A psychological horror - no gore or jump scares
For me this was a proper horror film - the horror of unseen monsters and being consumed by your fears and grief.Audiences appear to be split. If gore, jumps scares and annoying teens do it for you, then you'll probably hate this film. If on the other hand, you are look beyond the obvious this is a great horror film that deals with very real fears and emotions and the extremes to which they can lead. Great performances, genuinely unsettling, fantastically shot.

Walks the line of insanity
I am a big psychological horror fan and enjoyed this film so much. I came into this film thinking it would be some cheesy modern Hollywood horror movie, however it turned out to be a well made, well though out film that walks a fine line between what's real or not (sanity/insanity.) The story line is strong, the effects are good and the suspense is heavy at times, which I personally enjoy. All in all I'd recommend it but I'd suggest not to expect too much from it, as it's a weird film that has touches of an independent movie, a B movie or an art house movie, in the way that it's gritty and well shot but also hard to watch at times due to the film's dark nature, which I've come to expect from Australian and British films.

Disturbingly good. Wonderfully different.
Thankfully not like other horror films, The Babadook is a 'visual' visceral feast of human emotions as experienced by the lead actress Essie Davis and her son Samuel played by Noah Wiseman. Davis performance is one of the most convincing I think I have ever seen on screen. She plays the demure and flighty Amelia who is struggling to raise her son alone after the death of her husband. What ensues can only be described as entering into her nightmare which escalates to terrifying fever pitch. Noah Wiseman is OUTSTANDING! It's probably not one to watch if you yourself are feeling overwhelmed by strong emotions. I would avoid it until you feel in a more stable frame of mind. The Babadook could easily swallow you whole.

Unsettling
Worth watching just to see convincing acting from the main actress. Compliments to the make-up department for showing her so haggard and tired, even in close-up, as to seem about 40 years old. The story is far from unique for a horror film in that a partially-glimpsed malevolent creature is heard and feared. In addition to its disturbing activities, the woman descends into near-madness from strain, loneliness, worry and a serious lack of sleep. So, it is a moot point how much is in her own head and how much is projected by the creature. The last few scenes seem to marry the two together. An interesting movie.

Not for me.
This is an OK movie, I never really took much interest in this film when it came out and never bothered to watch it. It got quite a decent response and since the rent price is so reasonable I rented it and finally gave it a go. Not a bad film per say just not that brilliant...I'm not sure how to describe why, but I'll try.The plot is a little slow and it never really...satisfies you at the end? We are given no conclusion or explanation, which is OK if it leaves you with a cliffhanger ending and allows you to fill it in yourself, but it doesn't do that either its just down right confusing...Sorry but not my cup of tea.
