Triple bill of television adaptations based on novels by Jane Austen. In 'Mansfield Park' (2007), at 10, Fanny Price (Billie Piper) goes to live at Mansfield Park, the estate of her aunt's husband, Sir Thomas (Douglas Hodge). Clever, studious, and a writer with an ironic imagination and fine moral compass, Fanny becomes especially close to her cousin Edmund (Blake Ritson), Thomas's younger son. Fanny is soon possessed of beauty as well as a keen mind and comes to the attention of a neighbour, Henry Crawford (Joseph Beattie). Sir Thomas promotes this match, but to his displeasure, Fanny has a mind of her own, asking Henry to prove himself worthy. In 'Northanger Abbey' (2007), Catherine Moreland (Felicity Jones), a spirited young beauty from the country, enters into the depraved society of Bath with dreams and fantasies sparked by her love of gothic romance novels. There she meets two men vying for her affection - the dashing and jealous John Thorpe (William Beck) and the gentle and sincere Henry Tilney (J.J. Field). Despite the advice of her mischievous new friend Isabella (Carey Mulligan), Catherine treats neither as more than a dear friend. That is until Catherine accepts an invitation to Northanger Abbey from Henry's grave and severe father, General Tilney (Liam Cunningham). In 'Emma' (1997), Kate Beckinsale stars as the eponymous heroine who is intent on finding partners for everyone - but only if she thinks they are the right coupling. Her efforts create confusion, and the outspoken Mr Knightly pours scorn on her matchmaking - although he may have ulterior motives for doing so. Becoming a Jane fan
Well, I think I was a Jane Austen fan before. But to my shame I had read Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey only once and Emma only twice, so was not hugely familiar with any of these. Having watched them on TV, re-read the books and now re-watching on DVD, I think these are a great way of getting into some of her less well-known works. Yes, they suffer a little from the 'Andrew Davis' effect of sexing up the original books that can be a little distracting. But overall they are a faithful enough reflection of the originals, well acted and good value in a boxed set like this - particularly as many of you will already have the BBC Pride & Prejudice and Ang Lee film of Sense & Sensibility (it is more in the school of these than the Gwyneth Paltrow film of Emma or the recent Keira Knightley Pride & Prejudice). It's just a shame they couldn't squeeze Persuasion into the same boxed set - if they could this would have got the full five stars. As it is, it'll get four stars and a recommendation for anyone who is an Austen fan already or who has enjoyed either Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility and is looking to broaden their range.

Three Enjoyable Films, Good Box Set, All Films have Subtitles
This box set is great value for money. I enjoyed all three of the Jane Austen adaptions. Every DVD comes in its own case, all three films have subtitles for the hard of hearing, Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park also have an audio description track for visually impaired audiences. These two films are presented in a 16 : 9 aspect ratio (widescreen), Emma, which is an older film dating from 1996 is in a 4 : 3 aspect ratio, likely the original format for a made for TV production from the time. Picture and sound quality of all films is good. Very happy with this purchase.

Three good film adaptations of Jane Austen novels
Excellent adaptation of Northanger Abbey . Very good adaptation of Mansfield Park, though perhaps the actress who plays the heroine, Fanny Price, is too good looking for the part, but she acts it well. Very good adaptation of Emma.

Norhtanger Abbey is well made and well acted great adaptation. Emma I am not convinced Kate Becinsale ...
Norhtanger Abbey is well made and well acted great adaptation. Emma I am not convinced Kate Becinsale was the right person to play Emma but the story is well done and the rest of the cast fit well, so another good adaptation. Oh dear Mansfield Park, Billy Piper is really not the best choice does not suit the shy and subservient Fanny at all, you hardly see Mariah, and the orther Bertrum family really, almost no mention of Portsmouth or Fanny's return 'home'. If they had more time allotted for the story rather than slashing it to bits to squeeze the story in to a short space of time might have been worth it, but the worst adaptation I have seen by far. So will only be watching the other two I am afraid.

Assolutamente consigliato!
