Bought as a birthday gift
Such a good price, I was concerned it would be second hand/just a copy but looks to be the real deal and is unopened. The person who received it is very happy with it and noticed it's so heavy and well packed in 2 boxes. I ordered it 28th October and it stated it wouldn't arrive until 12-16th November but I needed it for the 3rd and it arrived on the 3rd so I was happy with that.

Worth my time and money
Often when reviewing childhood favourites they turn out to be disappointing, as we grow out of them. So I was worried it might be the case with Akira and was hesitant to splurge this much on the collection. But really it was worth it. Somehow it's a title that seems to be of timeless quality. Illustrations are drawn in nice, quality style, backgrounds are detailed and so so good and the story is just as fun as it was back then. On top of really good manga you get a mini artbook that goes over the process of creating the cover illustrations for manga. Interesting, especially if you study illustration and would like to learn a bit behind thought process of Katsuhiro Otomo. There's also a famous sew on patch, like the one Kaneda has on the back of his jacket. Looks good quality. All of that in a nice, sturdy box with magnetic clasps. My only complaint would be the way the box opens, which is up. That means every time I want to pick up a volume, I need to pull the very heavy box off the shelf, or else it won't open.

Heaven!!
The media could not be loaded. This is an absolute beast of a collection! Pure heaven for an Akira fan. It arrived in an epic box, the packaging around this was immense & made for a large item when arriving. There was no doubt it was well packed! It covered half of the front door step. Delivery was prompt too. A few days after ordering was all I had to wait. The books each have some colouring on the first couple of pages then continues throughout in black & white as per the original. The collectors box in which the books are stored is solid, well made & kinda beautiful. Very smart! There’s an iron-on patch included which is mega cool. The additional book, showing many of the designs is also an immense joy. It is perfect in every way. I thought on this for a couple of weeks before buying because I wanted to make sure I really wanted this & it wasn’t just an impulsive purchase, this being over a £100. But 100% worth it!

Neo Tokyo and beyond...
This is a fabulous collection of Katsuhiro Otomo's masterpiece. If you only know the movie, then I heartily recommend you discover it's origins. Otomo's work is that of a craftsman. His say is incredibly detailed and yet retains a fluidity and roughness that captures both his wonderfully realised world and the brutality contained therein. The story is by turns exciting, jaw-dropping and emotional. It's a big, long read.It should be noted that, whilst this is a translation into English, the format of the books remains Japanese; so the reader read from right to left. This can prove to be a little discombobulating, but I found that after a short while you get into the groove. This is a terrific collection, produced to a high standard and whilst not cheap, is well worth the investment.Manga at its absolute best!

Jaw dropping!
First off: what makes this set special? It's hardback. It's in the original asian 'right to left' format. And some inconsequential words are kept in their original Japanese, such as the main title page in book 1, and all the sound effects (all the important words, like dialogue, are in English). It's a small difference, but it really adds to the flavour of the art.The quality of the box set is incredible. The quality of the hardbacks is great. The box fits the books perfectly, and there's real attention to detail - including a mounted cardboard leaf for filling space underneath the main books which are slightly shorter than the art book. The patch is a lovely bonus. And at Amazon's price it's cheaper than buying all 6 books in paperback! If you want to get into the Akira books, I don't think they will be in better quality than this!I had read reviews of the box getting damaged. Amazon did a lousy job of packing the box: it was sent in a box about 50% larger with some paper for padding (which was obviously squashed by the heavy box of books!). There were some dents in the outer box when received due to so much air. However, the manufacturer has packed this box really well. The box set is stored in two cardboard boxes (each with a DO NOT UNPACK label): one outer box, then an inner box stored in polystyrene 'corner covers', and then the box set. So these two boxes did more than enough to save the poor Amazon packing.

AKIRA
More like 40th anniversary box set but doesn't lose marks for that.I was new to akira when I purchased this set, my only manga experience was berserk, which I thought would be impossible to top. Akira comes very close. The build quality is fantastic and was delivered by amazon without any corner dent or dings. My only grumble is the dust jackets are sightly wavy however it doesn't really take away from this masterpiece collected edition. This is a must read
