Q: Does the fire fit flush with the wall or does it need to be recessed ?

Hi, it's screwed directly to the wall with 4 screws one inside each corner of the opening. It's flairly flush and easy fitted in a few minutes. A bottle of fluid only lasts a few hours, this fire is really just for an effect.

Q: At present we are using a calor gas fire in are conservatory. It is doing a great job the only problem is the smell, do these give off any smells?

No, there's no smells are the oil you burn is a biofuel, but there's no an awful lot of heat from this, it's really just for an effect of a real flame. So if your calor gas is pumping out heat at full power, this won't be able to compete. But if it's just to take the chill out and something nice to look at, it'll do fine.

Q: Does the fire need to be wall mounted or can it be free standing?

This model have to be wall mounted. It won't stand on its own because the panel is curved. Just choose a different model if you want free standing, they all do the same job.
