This is great, on its own, but the website said the gimbal is sturdy enough to support accessories - and I assumed that would mean a microphone and snap on lighting. That was not the case. The gimbal could support my iPhone rig OR my Shure MV88+ microphone, but not both. And you have to attach the microphone to the iPhone rig in order to stabilize. It also could not hold the weight of one or two snap on lighting accessories. On its own, this is great for image stabilization and getting unique shots that you wouldn't otherwise. But, without the possibility of adding lighting or sound enhancers - it doesn't have a lot of purposes for me, in a live music setting. If you were shooting something where raw audio was fine and the lighting was already good - then this is great.

It is especially good for use with larger mobile phones due to it's larger size, compared to other popular models. It does require some study and practice to use it effectively. It can be used with the basic mobile phone apps, but you gain extra capabilities if you use one of the two apps that are available for this unit - available for Android and iPhones. The Smooth 5S comes with a small tripod stand that can be screwed onto the base, or the unit can be attached to a larger photography tripod for fixed recording. The 5S does not pack down as compactly as some other comparable gimbals, but it has strong, smooth motors, reasonably large controls and a large battery for all-day use. It comes with a small built-in fill light that is relatively effective. I would recommend watching some YouTube videos about this gimbal to get a feel for it's capabilities and features. It is well built, feature rich and has a good user interface - once you have taken the time to learn its controls and practiced them. I do find the indicator lights difficult to read in bright light - like about every other consumer electronic device. The Zhiyun Smooth 5S Professional Gimbal Stabilizer for Smartphone is definitely worth looking at to see if it is a good fit for your needs.

I’ve used other phone gimbals by major brands before and when I saw this I had to try it. First, it’s complicated. The instructions get you going and then you have to pair this with your phone and the app you are required to download and register for. Another photo app that wants my email and requires “access to all photos” which could scare most users if the brand isn’t known or trusted. I am also a software engineer and have developed with mobile and know that they aren’t viewing your photos, but the app requires access to be able to read / write and edit to your photo library so that it’s convenient. I mounted my iPhone 14 Pro Max to this and found that getting the gimbal to travel freely is problematic if the phone is balanced. The software / app is cool but I did a selfie panorama of my office with the gimbal on its tripod sitting on my desk and the image that was stitched together had jagged lines. Not useable beyond small scale amusement. When I tried doing dolly can while locked on to an object or my cat, the gimbal would do okay but then start to flip. I ended up cracking the screen protector on my iPhone 14 just above the selfie cam, so that’s not good and now I have to replace that. I watched the videos of this product on Amazon’s listing. In one of them a “director” was narrating about a film they made using this gimbal about a man on a beach who spills a fish tank. The entire video never shows the actual video of the actor recorded with the gimbal, but shows the narrator using it. In my opinion there’s a reason you aren’t shown the final video because I couldn’t get any good results with this. I don’t like to say this, but for a few dollars more a DJI gimbal has a proven track record and a much wider existence in the market. Definitely not for the novice or hobbyist photographer / videographer. I hope to keep trying to find a good use for this and update my review but after a few days on frustrations I can’t.

i have used quite a few of their larger gimbals and wasn't expecting too much out of this smaller one. i was definitely wrong. if you're familiar with using gimbals the setup and use is fairly easy. it took me about 5 minutes to get everything up and running. the app also works really well. keep in mind, you still have to try your best to keep steady in order to get super smooth footage. this just makes it easier.

I'm really enjoying this Zhiyun Smooth 5S gimbal with my Pixel 4a 5G. I'm pretty inexperienced with using my phone for video recordings, but have been observing how gimbals work from various livestreamers. The base 5S model from Zhiyun includes a built-in fill light, a small tripod attachment that can mount via a threaded camera mount to the bottom or side of the handle, and a basic charging cable. The gimbal is very sensitive to the orientation it's powered on in, which requires unlocking 2 of the axes via manually pushing them out of molded locks and unlocking the handle axis via a sliding lock tab on the back. The Zhiyun logo on the first motor housing is to point to the same side as the joystick control panel, which also makes the SMOOTH logo on the arm appear in the proper orientation. Without software installed, it can still perform basic stabilization and doesn't go into a "sleep mode", which is much better than I've seen happen to some livestreamers. Most of the buttons are hooked into the app though. I'm still learning how to use all these features because, again, I'm just an amateur playing with a new toy for vacation, but Zhiyun has done a great job of creating many types of controls so you can record videos without feeling the need to use your phone's touchscreen. I would suggest looking into the combo kit because this gimbal does have a number of pieces and might benefit from a carry case, especially, but you also might want the extra light if you do much low light recording. The single light helps, but the range is kind of limited with lenses as small as that in most phones.

This stabilizer is nice to have for live videos and selfies. It is easy to setup and use as well.

A bit fiddly to get initially setup and get the app working -- and figuring out all the buttons/options -- but after that it's fairly straightforward to use. Like that it has a little tripod at the bottom as well. Do wish it folded down a bit smaller -- I'd say this is more suited for professional vloggers -- where the insta360 version might be more consumer facing.

Every thing is absolutely beautiful and the stabilization is amazing but the buttons are cheap
