Great little portable emergency radio
This is a great palm-sized radio with excellent battery life, spoken word audio quality and the simplest of old-fashioned controls which work (no Bluetooth or digital radio). There is no digital display for tuning, but that is no problem if you mainly listen to one station. Reception is excellent with the telescopic aerial, the sound is clear and loud enough and the plastic construction is very light but stands up properly and seems perfectly robust enough for temporary or occasional use as a backup. For these purposes it is pretty much unbeatable at the amazing price.

Impressive little radio
This is a cracking little radio! Really small size but big sound and so easy to use. Absolute bargain. We needed a small radio in our outside bar and this does the trick 100% percent. Takes 2x AA batteries. Well impressed.

The look and feel externally is very good, and is of high quality.
It looks bigger in the photo, so check the dimensions! The look and feel externally is very good, and is of high quality. My application is only for extreme emergency situations, so not ordinary use. The requirement requires reliability, and lack of digital stuff (which will fail in case of EMP for example). The sound is nice and clear on FM even down to 3.4 V. If sound quality is not an issue then it ran down below 3 V, which is very impressive. The spec says it takes 300 mA at 5 V. Even at high volume it was only drawing 100 mA at 5 V, with 50 mA being a more realistic current. The low voltage operating means it will certainly work on rechargeable NiMH AA batteries, and at 50 mA current it will give good battery life. I didn’t find a lot of activity on the 9 short-wave bands. The AM band was limited to above 522 kHz, which was a bit disappointing as I wanted to try picking up 198 kHz (Droitwich). There is an external power connector (which I was using to check the operating voltage). Frustratingly they don’t say what the connector is other than “DC jack”. (I would not call it a “jack” given the female innermost connection). You can see the pin on the radio body which the power connector mates with, but it is too deep in the socket to measure with callipers. I guessed that it was a 1.1mm inner diameter, 3.5mm outer diameter connector. That did not fit as the inner pin was too large :-( 1.3 mm inner diameter, 3.5 mm outer diameter worked. But that meant I had spent an extra £6 to get the right connector :-( That has to lose a star. Given the application, I think that wrapping it in several overlapping layers of aluminium kitchen foil is a cheap improvement for long term storage.

Competent, small AM/FM travel radio with lots of SW bandspreads too
As too often happens, the review stream merges different (and some more expensive) models. So I'll clarify here to say I bought an XHDATA D219. It has all antilog controls and no frills and the underlying tuning is PLL, internally that's digitally managed so when tuning you notice the stepping effect. Bought this is for power outages in the UK and for travel where I want to tune into local FM/AM stations. Shortwave could be useful, maybe. This model takes 2 AA cells, I put in rechargeables and the radio is happy. For its low price point its a great little (tiny?) radio. Competent and sensitive/selective AM and FM reception and adequate build quality. I was nervous there would be a day 1 fault at this price, well, the tuning pointer is at a slight angle and the frequency indication is some way off. But it works nicely and isn't going back.

Seems nice with a clear sound
It is what it is. Not base heavy this is perfect as a portable radio or for casual background music. Volume is loud enough for background but is not on par with modestly priced Bluetooth speakers. Then again it is a completely different beast. This is an old style transistor radio. It is perfect for listening to while cooking or for background music. If you are expecting HIFI quality you are looking at the wrong device. It is exactly what it is meant to be. It is how we used to listen to music a long time back. It is still great for local stations and as something lightweight that sounds better than a phone speaker by a country mile.

A good radio at a great price.
I have had this for a few months now and I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised by the little thing. Its easy to use with a clear display. The batteries seem to last long but I don't use it continuously. The sound is good enough for my ears. I would recommend this.

OK.
OK for a cheap radio, would have appreciated an SMA antenna port too, but I guess you can't have everything. Not wildly sensitive indoors, has a bit of noise on all SW stations that it can pick up.

Just perfect
I love this little radio, it's class. Great sound, performance and no problem finding a station. Definitely great value for money.

Radio D219.
Molto soddisfatto dell'acquisto. Obbiettivo raggiunto.
