When I first saw this, I thought it was going to be a five minute wonder that would break and then never work again. However I couldn't be more wrong, this product is a sweet gift for anyone and seems to have a sense of calmness to it. Very well designed and easily a gift for any age.

I got this for my sister, who has Down syndrome. It's for her birthday, so I haven't given it to her yet. I have no doubt she will love it considering she loves butterflies and fairies so much. The butterfly itself was smaller than I originally thought, but it's not too small. It's still a perfect size, just don't expect it to be these large butterflies we see normally in nature (mainly how the Yellow Swallowtail is normally around here {NC}). Frankly, I've seen more monarchs this size than I have any other. So, if you want realism, probably go with monarch or the blue. The description says "Ambient sound may also make it flutter". I've had it in a room with a TV going and had no such luck. After a very long while, it will turn off (or go in sleep mode), but it will not turn on to sound. I've even clapped in front of it when it stopped moving (not in sleep mode) and still nothing happened. I can also find no such hole where a mini microphone would be placed to pick up the sound. So, if it can, I can't see how nor have I seen it work. The ThinkGeek website I don't believe even states it works with sound. It went into sleep mode one time so far, as it does take a while for this to happen, and it sat in still animation floating in the middle of the jar. I don't know if this is normal or it just turned off in mid flight, but it did break immersion greatly. When you watch it, you do get the feeling there is a real butterfly inside, it's crazy. However, that moment of sleep mode broke the realism feeling. When the room is quiet, I can hear the motor running while it flies around from across the room. I even have slightly poor hearing. I can also notice a few bugs (pun intended) where it is trying to flutter, but instead rocks back and forth because the wings locked up. You will notice this happening in a few review videos as well, so it appears to be quite a common glitch. As I said, it does take a while to go into sleep mode. It's been nearly an hour as I'm writing this since I last played with it and it has yet to turn off. I've noticed it does react to vibration from around it, such as laying down a glass next to it or walking heavy across the floor. Which I like because in real life, a butterfly would react to those things. Last thing, in the sunlight, you can see the wire, but in a normally lit room, you can't. I also noticed you have a less chance of seeing it if you have the butterfly swarm facing in the direction you want people to view it. Despite everything I said, I still give this five stars for just being a great gift for a young child or, in my case, a butterfly-loving sister. I can also see this being a great gift for nature-lovers in general, especially those not so techno-savvy to where it will take them a while to figure out how it works.

I bought two of the monarchs for my mom. She keeps the jars on her screened in porch and when friends come over they love them. She wanted to have two sent to her cousin in Arizona. Monarchs are common to our area, which is why I picked them for her. I selected the yellow swallowtails for her cousin because they are the state insect of Arizona. My mom is older and her friends can't see the wire that attaches the electronic butterfly to the battery. An elderly gentleman said that she was cruel for not having air holes in the jar. He told her it would die soon. She showed him the on and off switch under the lid and tried to explain, but honestly, it is very life-like and he was a bit confused. Nice gift to brighten a desk in the winter.

This is a 'must have!' I bought it for my cats who were vaguely interested but it is the 'humans' who love it most. From the 'ha ha, you've caught a butterfly' to the 'really upset' who told us we were cruel and should let it go. For real authenticity, you need to just drill a couple of air holes in the lid. (Unscrew it first!) We now have it on the garden table. This has given us a lot of fun.

Ist sehr witzig, aber es funktioniert nur wenn man mal auf den Deckel haut, oder sehr laut ist. Haut man auf den Deckel fängt er wieder längere Zeit an zu fliegen. Ist schön anzusehen.
