Yes, the unit has two catches that lift up, thus gripping the bottom of the laptop when elevated up at any angle, my 15" MBP fits with at least 2" on either side to play with so I forsee no problems with your model

Does cooling pad need charging for the lights and fans to come on, got it today and it wouldn't turn on

It does not have a battery. it must be plugged into a usb slot. Laptop/ charging adapter etc will provide power. There should be a usb to usb cable with the product.

If your device has a side length of at least 16cm then the anti slip tabs will support it at a tilted angle. Ipads don't have rubber grips so this will be your only method to keep the ipad from sliding off the bottom when you tilt the tray up. The fans and lights will draw battery from the ipad via usb, so plugging the ipad in or the tray in to a usb wall charging adapter might be the best way. Check the side length of your ipad before trying this product.
