EXCELLENT FOR SMALL PERSON!!
I don't often write reviews, but figured this might help someone on the fence about this tool: I've owned the tool about a week, so still can't speak to longevity of the product, but so far, I LOVE it. I'm guessing that those that hate it might be used to using heavier duty, gas powered, professional units. #1 I was in the market for a new trimmer/edger, and since I already have the chainsaw and leaf blower, and a couple big batteries for the greenworks, thought I'd give this a try. #2 I'm a 54 year old woman, 5'3" tall and about 128 pounds, who has been using a ryobi string trimmer for the past 3 years. This greenworks unit is incredible by comparison. I'm able to shorten the unit to string trim or edge comfortably, without undue strain on my arms and shoulders (the ryobi was too long, and I had to darn near contort myself to keep it up off the ground when I used it, the balance being off for someone of my stature). #3 I used the unit to trim and edge my professional cut flower field, consisting of (8) 40- foot, in-ground beds, plus (4) 50-foot exterior timber frame beds. It took one 4ah battery, plus a little of the 2ah battery that came with the unit. Now that I'm comfortable using it, I anticipate co.pleting the entire field with just the one battery. #4 I followed the directions for auto releasing the string, and experienced *no issues* at all. Each time you use the auto release function, as others have stated, it only releases about 1/4" of line, and it released flawlessly each and every time. Read and follow directions. #5 By the end of last year's flower season I was half dead from trying to prevent the grass paths from growing into the beds. I shed tears of gratitude last week using this to edge and lightly trench the beds, thinking of the many, many hours of hands and knees work I might now be liberated from doing. #6 Unit did a fair job of cutting tough pasture grasses so that I could move my chicken coops and electric net to fresh ground. For the price point and utility, I believe it to be a great purchase.

DO NOT BUY - Defective design
Do not buy this! Defective design I have a greenworks electric 40v mower that I use at our lake property and it works great. So i thought I would order this matching 40v weedeater and go all electric. Well, first use and I am returning. The weedeater has a fatal flaw and should be recalled. Instead of the bump advance head that every other weedeater uses, they use an auto advance string. Problem is the string advance is very slow. Using it will wear the string down much faster than it advances. So the result is you are cutting with only 3 or 4inches of string out. It makes the weedeater unusable. The only solution is to run the weedeater in the air for a minute to let the string advance after every minute or two of use. Of course that wastes time and shortens battery life. If this had a bump head, it would be a really nice option but as it stands... it is horrible. DO NOT BUY! Trust me on this, if you buy this, you will be sending back like I am. Shame on Greenworks for releasing a clearly flawed product. Their mower works so nice... why make such a terrible weedeater?

Review from a woman
As a first time female user of a weed wacker, i found it easy to use and handle. It performed well on my yard for both edging and weed wacking. I found it easy to switch back and forth between the functions The battery lasted long enough for my moderately sized south Florida suburban yard. The only negative was u has to open the wire and feed out knew during use. This only happened the second time i used it. Not sure why. I asked siri how and was easily able to do it with just a word explanation.

Don’t give up on it!
After researching all the other weed eaters out there, I settled on this 40v Greenworks weed eater because husband has the Greenworks Chainsaw and just loves it. I was also excited to get another 40v battery that will work on the chainsaw. The assembly of this item is pretty simple. It does require a Phillips head screwdriver. After assembly, it felt a bit heavy but oddly enough after putting the battery on it, it balanced out quite well. Of note, this 40v battery is lighter than our other ones. Pleased with my purchase, I headed out to weed eat the garden. After about a minute, the string broke and continued to break about every minute over and over again. The string also wouldn’t feed, but I have since learned that it will feed about 1/4” every time it starts. I was truly disappointed. My beautiful Greenworks worked no better than my old worn out Black and Decker. I came back to Amazon and began reading the reviews and learned that lots of people had the same issue. I took their advice and got a different brand of string, not the twisted string, and I rewound my spool. To my delight, I just finished weed eating for over an hour without a single break of the string. The battery never slowed down and would probably out last me. Greenworks, you make a wonderful product. Don’t ruin it with cheap string!

Exceeded Expectations!
I was all set to purchase this trimmer as well as a corded steel blade edger but decided to try out this string trimmer (that has an edger feature on it as well) before investing in a stand alone steel blade edger. So glad I waited! This Greenworks 40v Cordless Trimmer/Edger far exceeded my expectations on several levels. Easy to assemble and adjusts nicely for ergonomics and balance. Love the auto feed string feature - always hated the tap-to-feed easy to jam-it-up frustrations of previously owned trimmers. Power-power-power!!! Cuts through heavy grass and weeds like a gas powered trimmer. The best surprise was its ability to effortlessly edge (and trench) - saving me $$$ by not having to purchase a stand alone edger. See photo! Great product and value.

Will work but takes you three times as long
Gets the job done, but doesn’t work as expected. The string is suppose to feed out automatically when you turn it on at full speed. Mine does not. After using it a little and the string clips off like it should, it stops auto feeding making it really frustrating to edge/trim. I’m constantly removing the cover to manually feed the string out.

Made cheap. But you get what you pay for.
I was pretty excited for this, as I have the 40V lawn mower. I don’t have a big space to do edging-I live in a cookie cutter HOA neighborhood. Less than 500 feet of edging. And that’s probably a high estimate. It was pretty easy to assemble. Took me 15 minutes. My FL lawn was grown from the few rain storms so I was excited to try this. First issue—I’m almost 6’ and the shaft would not stay to max height. I was not even 45 seconds in and I dropped it because the shaft collapsed. After dunking around with it I discovered I had to tighten the screws. Okay. No problem. Second issue, which became the deal breaker. If I want to turn it from edging to wheel whacking, I had to loosen the screws, turn it, THEN tighten the screws back in. Who carry’s a screw driver with them when doing lawn work? Not me. And it wasn’t going to become a new routine. Not to add, the plastic wheels are less than mediocre. Often got stuck if the ground wasn’t even or I went over a small rock. I never got to finish edging before I gave up. Back into the box and returned. Very disappointed.
