Can you charge the rear speakers with a usb or micro usb charger (or does it only charge when plugged into the sound bar)?

Yes you can. But you may have to turn on speaker first before plugging in the micro usb to charge in order to connect to the sound bar. We have found that it will not connect if it is plugged in when we turn on the system. We would have to unplug micro usb, turn on speaker, verify white light is in, then plug back in micro usb.

Can this be used w/o a tv? I just want a sound system for my shop that I can connect to via bluetooth w/ my iphone and play my itunes library on.

Yes. It has a Bluetooth setting where nothing needs to be connected.

Our mutes itself and will unmute for a second and then mutes again. Any suggestions

I had a different problem and called JBL support. I unplugged the power cord for a couple hours and reconnected. That fixed it. I suggest you call them first though.
