How to Speak Chicken: Why Your Chickens Do What They Do & Say What They Say

This is a fun, light hearted book. We enjoyed comparing notes with the sights and sounds of our chickens.

I got this How to Speak Chicken book for my daughter, who is 10 years old, so she can help take care of our flock. When the chickens were just chicks, they are so cute and fun, and we paid attention to everything they did and couldn’t play with them enough. But now that they are a little older they established their flock, their pecking order, started laying eggs, and began free ranging. I began googling different questions and topics and decided it was a good idea to pick up a book to learn more about chicken behavior. This book was a fantastic resource, with pictures and explanations for chicken behaviors that were both informative and humorous at times. The book was well-written, likely around a third grade level so my daughter was able to read it and understand what she was reading. She read the book in three days, reading a few chapters a day. She enjoyed the information and telling us about everything she learned and what she was observing with the flock. I was grateful for this book as it sparked good conversation and information gathering that my daughter had a real life experience with. I highly recommend this book for its straightforward answers, humor, completeness, and fun. It would make a great gift for anyone starting out with a new flock!

This was a birthday present for a lady who loves her chickens!!

This paperback is not what I expected. Small chapters with an abundance of photos make this book easy to digest. The topics range from chicken beak care to chicken bullying. Behavior that I never noticed is explained. The authors find chickens are smarter and more trainable than I ever knew. A thoroughly enjoyable read, this book is recommended.

If you like chickens, it's interesting. If I still had chickens I would use it as a textbook.

This book was way more inciteful than I expected. Lots of great information.

I bought this book several years ago and am finally getting to my chicken project. This is the first book I've read. I think it's great for people just getting into chickens and for kids. This book was refreshing for me because I tend to read "technical" how-to stuff which is boring. For just starting this project, this book gave me some good motivation. It was very uplifting and fun. Facts mixed with short stories. I say it would be good for kids because the pages are nice quality with pictures on nearly every page. There's not any fluff...strictly information. Short snippets that kids wouldn't get bored reading it or having a parent read to the child. I read it in a couple of hours. I'd definitely recommend the book.

I absolutely loved this book. It gives general information about poultry behaviour, based in realistic examples. I recommend this book to poultry producers, veterinarians, animal production engineers and also to people that just have these animals has pets in their backyards. 5 star rate!
