This book has one real letter inside, all of the others are just printed on the page!
I am really disappointed with this book! My five year old absolutely loves Dear Tooth Fairy with all of the little letters to take out and read. I searched the Internet for children's books with real letters to buy some more for her and came across this one. All of the 'letters' are printed on the page so there is nothing to take out and unfold to read, apart from one envelope at the very end. She is going to be so disappointed! Luckily, I also bought The Jolly Postman and that does have real letters to take out and read. To be fair, my review is purely based on the lack of real letters and not the actual story as I haven't read it yet.

Misleading - Don't get caught out like me.
I returned this book as it was not as described & not what I was expecting following previous experience with Dear Tooth fairy. The letters from the mermaid are printed on the pages inside, which was disappointing since my daughter has read Dear Tooth Fairy & she could remove each letter from it's own envelope on each page, making it much more exciting. It was a little misleading on the front cover suggesting "with letters & a real mermaid gift". There is x1 final letter & a gift of a mini paper photo frame to be removed from x1 envelope on the final page. I recall the Dear Tooth fairy book was a hard cover, so maybe it is necessary to purchase in hard cover, in order to receive a 'real' letter on each page. Quite misleading though & thus the price is too steep for this book. (Publisher issue - Not amazon fault).

Obviously this is a big disappointment for a six-year-old
This is a lovely story, and a lovely idea, which captivated my daughter. The one-star rating is for the overall experience - unfortunately, in the copy we bought from The Book House, via Amazon, the final little envelope in the book was torn, and the mermaid pendant, which should have been enclosed, was missing. Obviously this is a big disappointment for a six-year-old, especially as the point of the book is the excitement of opening all the little envelopes throughout. The book appears to be out of print, so, if buying, please ensure that the copy is intact to avoid disappointing your child.

A beautiful book!
This is an enchanting and beautifully illustrated book about a little girl's correspondence with a mermaid, and the search for a lost key. The ongoing story is told on the book's pages, but each letter is seperate and tucked in it's own little envelope, adding a secret and magical element to the experience. There are challenges and other bits and pieces in the envelopes, too! My friend's 3-year-old daughter loves mermaids and this book was an instant hit with her, though obviously it has to be read to her and she needs help to open up the envelopes. I'm sure older girls (6 to 9 years) would also adore the story and would no doubt get more out of the letters and puzzles, and would be able to read and re-read it on their own, too.

Disappointed
We have the book Dear Father Christmas by the same author and it is my daughters favourite story all year round. She pointed out the Dear Mermaid book advertised at the back of the book and I thought I'd get it for her. Very disappointed to find that the letters in this book are just written on the page, no little letter to get out of an envelope which is the main appeal with the Dear Father Christmas book. Don't think it will be a favourite which is a real shame.

Lovely story for Mermaid fans
Great quality book with a lovely story. Such a shame it’s not like the original version where you could take each letter out and read them.Instead the letters are printed on the page. Still a lovely story though
