The Van Damme Collection [Blu-ray]

I am a huge JCVD fan and have been since I was kid. I am a completist and am working on now upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray where I believe it is worthwhile (if releases are a genuine step up in quality, version and/or features from the DVD). AWOL has been one of my favourite JCVD films and I was always going to upgrad based on my love of the film. The transfer here is great and actually made me take much more notice of the soundtrack than I had done before. No extras but also no worries. Death Warrant is a great film and the transfer here again is great. It's less of a favourite but I enjoy a regular rewatch and will be going to this version now. Black Eagle is a part of JCVD's history and is watchable but not a favourite of mine. The transfer is not as good but it looks like a lot of work has been done to bring it to this level and therefore I won't be too critical. I think it is a real shame that there is no subtitles on any of the discs but I'm guessing this was a time/cost thing. I got a great deal on this package and probably wouldn't have paid full price (I would have just bought AWOL individually) but if you love the films and see a deal I would recommend. The loss of the star is for the lack of subtitles as this limits who can enjoy this package.

3 early Jean Claude Van Damme action movies. Black Eagle sees a fighter jet with a top secret weapon crash in the Mediterranean Ocean and the Americans and Russians racing to find it. One of Van Damme's weaker movies with Van Damme as the Russian villain and some awful acting from the cast but good action and fight scenes make it watchable. AWOL is next also known as Lionheart in some countries and is the best of the 3 films seeing Van Damme as a member of the French Foreign Legion who goes Awol after hearing his brother has been hurt and ends up competing in an underground fight club. Very enjoyable with good action and decent performances. Death Warrant finishes the set seeing Van Damme as a tough cop undercover in a tough prison hunting a killer and is a lot of fun if slow in parts with decent performances and good action and fight scenes. These are cheap no holds barred old school action movies strictly for fans only and good fun to watch.

Worth the price just for AWOL, it's a classic. Van Damme's characters are more human, more likeable and more vulnerable than Seagal's (for example). In this, he deserts the Foreign Legion when his brother is fatally wounded and gets drawn into the underground fighting scene. An opportunistic fight organiser becomes Van Damme's self-appointed manager and they're both taken in by an intelligent and powerful woman; unfortunately their patron turns on them when Van Damme rejects her. Much face-kicking ensues. The characters were likeable, the fighting scenes well done and it's generally a brilliant film.

3 classic Van Damme movies on 3 discs in one no frills set.No extras which is a shame but you cant go wrong for the price.It's worth it just to get AWOL on bluray in my opinion.
