You can replace the batteries. There is a battery compartment on the under side of the pet.

The battery ran out after only a week....is that normal? I don't want to have to change the batteries every time I visit my 96 year old Grandma.

I Found the battery life ok,but then I too thought they had run out,but after pressing the body a couple of times it came back to life or fiddle with the batteries. I actually thought that it knocks itself off .
