Add a little Austin power to your evening wear!
The quest began, as so many of these things do, with a simple question: shall I get some new slippers? We racked our brains for an alternative to a good pair of slippers. Those weird socks with rubbery bits on the underside?Too floppy and pointless.Clogs?Too noisy.Flips-flops?Please! We're civilised people, after all!Crocs? That was dismissed without an answer. The free slippers from the spa in Austria?Still in their wrapper - which spoke volumes. No, there was nothing for it - I would have to investigate into a new pair of (and it pains me to think about it still) slippers. As is the usual course of events nowadays I went straight to my computer, a hulking beast of a thing, glowing in the corner of the second bedroom, dominating all around it who bathe in its warm glow. With a pair of deft taps upon the keyboard: "am", the favoured provider of just-about-all-things was displayed to mine eyes. After scrolling through all the more interesting things in the 'Health and Beauty' section, I finally gave in and with a heavy heart, typed in:"Mens slippers".What a bounteous collection there was from which to choose! So much choice, in fact, it was almost overwhelming.I floundered like a drowning man, but as I tried to select just one pair with which to adorn my chilly toes, I suddenly noticed something to my left which might just be my salvation.By using certain 'tabs' I could 'filter' the items shown on the screen before me.This quickly proved to be the case.Carefully and dextrously I typed.Size: 9 (or should it be 10? The old faithfuls were a ten...)With this in mind I changed my initial choice of nine and altered it to a more roomy ten.Colour was the next question.Well, I quite fancied a changed from my usual brown or blue and, having good taste, there was no way I was interested in the 'comedy slippers', so I allowed my fingers to select 'black'.Slippers tend to be, after all, evening wear, so what better colour than 'Nocturn', ebony, noir, scwarz to accompany one's finest Derek Rose, silk pyjamas? So, black it was to be.I wanted something that didn't make my feet look like they'd been run over by a knobbled steam-roller - so that was the moccasins discounted. The open-backed type are fine as long as you never take a step backwards and, in so doing, lose your protective covering to your besocked foot. Not too much of an issue while on your Axminster, but when taking out your empty Moet bottles on a wet evening? One shudders at the thought. Then my eyes befell the 'Austin slip-ons with twin side gussets'.Just the name tantalised me: "Austin" - how very British, how very trustworthy, how very "pipe and slippers".The streamlined shape reminded one of Cambell's 'Bluebird' land-speed-record cars - slim and svelte, yet purposeful and masculine.Yes, I could see myself in these beauties already. With trembling fingers - and I'm sure a twitch from my old, holey, split and coming-undone-at-the-seams slippers - I ordered a pair of size ten.As per usual, your correspondent is pleased to report, the order went through without a hitch. My phone, sitting beside me at the time, chimed to let me know an electronic-mail had been received with the confirmation of the order being placed. But even here there was to be a surprise.Delivery, it stated, was to be the very next day!How could this be?!Do they use some kind of teleportation device to transport their goods around the country?I was, I have to confess, a little sceptical, but one day, three days, it wasn't a problem. My old faithfuls would have a slight reprieve. The next day found me in the Metropolis, carrying out some labours for a friend who also needed a lift to the hospital. While I was awaiting her return from the X-Ray department, I received another electronic-mail to say that (and I still can't quite believe this) - my 'Austin slippers were handed to a neighbour'.Well, to say I was mightily impressed was an understatement!I even told my friend when she returned on her crutches. She did her best to be excited for me, but I'm not wholly convinced she was as excited as she sounded. Still, it was nice gesture.I hurried home excitedly, making sure, however, to abide by the laws of the road and keep my speed down to safe limits.Having new slippers to come home to certainly IS exciting, but there's no need for recklessness. As I pulled into the gravel forecourt, my neighbour was shuffling from his wine store toward his front door.(If there was ever anyone who needed some new slippers - it's him!)He waved and went instantly indoors to, as I quickly found out, retrieve my parcels. My hands shook with excitement as I removed the key from the ignition and alighted from my vehicle, which clicked and ticked as it cooled. My neighbour approached me with not one, but *two* packages!"These came for you yesterday", he said, all plummy and Home-Counties.I took them from him with the good grace my mother taught me, thanked him, and beetled indoors to review my purchases. The slippers were in a conventional cardboard box - plain the casual observer, but to those who knew what was inside - a veritable Pandora's Box of delights!I'm sure I allowed a small gasp of pleasure to escape my lips as I removed them from their cardboard confinement. They were everything I'd hoped for - and more.Smart yet casual, aloof yet approachable, structured yet relaxed. My outdoor shoes were off in a twinkling, the coolness of the morning instantly being felt upon my toes.I quickly extracted the cardboard and paper from inside the Austins, but before sliding my feet into them, I just had to gaze upon their wondrous beauty. What kind of adventures would we be having together, I wondered.Under whose table (and bed) would they find a home?To whom would I answer the door, safe in the knowledge that my slippers could hold their own with the 'smart set', here in the Hampshire countryside.I could wait no longer.Placing them carefully upon the bedside rug I slipped my right foot in between the awaiting gussets, their stretch allowing easy entry. The left foot quickly followed suit.I sat on the edge of the bed marvelling at the lovely shape, the blackness, the comfort.Feeling the inside with my toes, I think I could have possibly got away with a size nine, they seem to be quite generously proportioned. But tight slippers are never as warm as slightly oversized ones, so I was perfectly content with the extra room.I am slightly embarrassed to confess I then spent a good fifteen minutes looking at my feet in the full-length mirror.Turning this way and that, enjoying the side view, the front view, even the rear view! They are, without a doubt, the smartest slippers I have, and I don't think it's too strong a word: owned. When one puts their foot into something, and that something complies comfortingly, willingly and soothingly, there is a definite feeling of ownership, but more than 'ownership' - it's a partnership, a friendship, a love. These slippers have changed my life.I don't yet know if they'll (as the old saying goes) make me "more attractive to women", we'll have to wait until tomorrow for that (but I'm quietly confident)So, if you ARE thinking of some new slippers, and you want something a tad smarter than the usual, then I can heartily recommend these beauties. And if you've read this far - you've got FAR too much time on your hands! ;-)They're slippers.I ordered some. They arrived. They're okay.

Really strong factory smell
I'm not usually drawn to review many products purchased here, but in this instance I wanted to note a few things for other buyers. I purchased these to wear at the office, and I wanted something functional but also reasonably presentable. In this respect, the slippers are fine. There's no lining to speak of, and material is quite thin so I wouldn't recommend these if you're looking for warmth.I ordered a size 9 as the shoes I normally wear are UK 9 to 9.5 ; the slippers I received are marked size 9, but it's actually closer to UK size 10. To give you an idea, these size 9's leave about 3/4 of an inch from the tip of my toe. While it's not quite enough to warrant a return (they fit, and they don't come off), I would consider ordering a size 8 in the future for a 'snug' fit.Lastly, and really the main reason I'm writing: these slippers come with a really strong 'factory' smell. It's difficult to overstate how strong the chemical smell is; to the point where any room I'm in will smell like these new slippers within 5 minutes. It's quite overpowering, and (subjectively) I can almost taste it in the air. They don't come with any washing instructions or labelling, but at this point I'm considering putting them through the washing machine just to try to get the smell out.
