In a Slow TV Christmas special, BBC Four rigs a traditional reindeer sleigh with a fixed camera for a magical journey across the frozen wilderness of the Arctic. Following the path of an ancient postal route, the ride captures the traditional world of the Sami people who are indigenous to northern Scandinavia and for whom reindeer herding remains a way of life.Filmed in Karasjok, Norway 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle this journey takes us through breathtaking scenery not normally glimpsed by anyone other than the Sami. Deliberately unhurried, the rhythmic pace of the reindeer guides us along an epic two-hour trip over undulating snowy hills, through birch forests, across frozen lakes and past traditional Sami encampments.Facts about the reindeer, natural history, Sami culture and Arctic climate are delivered by graphics and archive stills embedded into the passing landscape. With no commentary, music or presenter just the crunching of snow and the soft tinkle of a reindeer bell, this hypnotic sleigh ride is an enchanting experience to put everyone in the Christmas spirit.

My winter wonderland
I watched this several times on television and was enchanted by it until the BBC television engineers pulled the plug on my catch up facility. I thought I had lost it forever but was surprised to see it amongst the dvd's for mindfulness on Amazon's website. Of course I bought it straight away. It is my winter wonderland. Inside the Arctic Circle where the Sami people and rheindeer live, A journey taken at walking place through the stunning arctic countryside with only natural sounds. Yes I know it is real but it shows a way of life, a culture so different from the one we find ourselves in that it is like a fantasy. No matter how many times I watch it my enjoyment remains the same. It is christmas eve 2020. This year we have lived through dreadful times caused by over crowding and over urbanisation so this film is even more important for all of us to watch and be involved in. How lovely it is

Beautifully shot
I couldn't wait for this DVD to arrive. It's beautiful to watch h but the informative little cloud bursts are also great until I read the reindeers hide is used for clothes and their antlers for tools. That put me off straight away. It's calming and relaxing, although as have to admit to begin with the reindeer looked more like an animatronic one than a real one. They are beautiful animals and they deserve to live their life in peace, and not be used for coats and tools.I would love to go on that sleigh ride, then I would end up bringing the reindeer home with me so nobody could ever hurt him!!

Worth slowing down for!
Certainly grows on you as the film progresses! The unexpected little clouds of interpretive information are timely and enhance one's appreciation of this slow-paced ride. A thoroughly satisfying trip through an enchanting cultural and natural environment I may never get to visit in-person. Wanted to reach right into the wintery scene and pet my favorite reindeer.... good boy, good girl. Here in Alaska even my cats watched it. Not like anything else I've seen. Pure delight!

great seasonal dvd
Great to have on over Xmas and New Year with other music on in background, very zen! However, most people under 35 don't seem to get it and kept asking when was something going to happen! Colours are lovely and great just to see snow etc when our weather is just wet and grey

Great programme - mediocre product quality
Wonderful programme! But a DVD is not the right way to show the beautiful scenery we have here. The picture quality simply is not good enough. This should really have been released in the Blu-Ray format! Where is the Blu-Ray???
