I am making tote bags. Which size is most appropiate..?

I used Dritz 1-9/16Pewter rings for my bag as they were recommended by the pattern maker. Tried cheaper ones from the curtain shop but would not close properly over the fabric.The bag I made was from a pattern by " Indygo Junction",Grids & Grommets IJ805. Hope this is OK.

Do they come apart again if you wanted them to?

Yes, there is a very small indent on the edge where the two parts meet. If you put a very fine screwdriver gently into this indent and twist slightly, you should be able to prise them apart.

When it says a pack of 8 does it mean 8 sets making 8 holes or 8 single making only 4 holes?

It's 8 holes - I used them for bags actually and they are fine - you need strong hands to click them together though

Would these grommet do a heavy curtin fabric

Not sure but I would see if you could get the metal ones for a heavy curtain fabric.
