Artesania Latina – Wooden Ship Model Kit – Spaniard and Mediterranean Fishing Boat, Trawler Mare Nostrum – Model 20100N, 1:35 Scale – Models to Assemble – Intermediate Level

This is the third Artesania Latina model boat I have made and the kits are first class. Instructions are fine but you have to use a bit of initiative at times. All three have turned out fine.

I am a first time modeler and am not a handy person at all. I chose this model because I wanted to do a smallish wooden boat that doesn't have a lot of rigging. I am doing this (besides the obvious enjoyment of modelling!) to teach myself to work on a much larger wooden and metal model of the battleship Yamato. I am about half way through this model and have finished the hull and a few things on the deck such as the cabin. The instructions are superb as this is part of Artesania Latina's new model range (which has better instructions for each of the 4/5 models in this range). The parts are also very nice. The only issue (which I think the other reviews might be referring to too) is that there is not enough planking to complete the hull. I was mildly annoyed (hence the four starts). However, this can easily be purchased on eBay, and you can work on the other parts while you are waiting for it to arrive. With regard to difficulty, Artesania Latina is contradictory about this. The box and web site classify it as intermediate difficulty, but somewhere they also say that it is for beginners. As I said, I am a first timer modeler. I have found this to be a challenge, but nothing has been insurmountable so far. You will just need a lot of patience and to try your best. I would imagine this model would also appear to many intermediate modelers, because, as the web site says, it contains quite a bit of detail. This is also a smallish model, which I think makes some of the tasks more difficult, such as the bending the wood around the hull.

I don't know why this boat is called an "easy build." It is a pretty standard double plank on bulkhead boat kit. There is nothing easy about these boats. The instructions- like most- assume you know what you are doing and its easy to make missteps if this is your first boat. Additionally, the kit did not come with enough mahogany wood for the second planking. I've read in other places that for some reason, that is common with the kit. I had a separate source I had to buy more. So, it's a nice little boat- but it will take a lot of effort to build. Don't be fooled by "easy build" and don't expect to do this in a rainy weekend or two.
