Really wonderful
Great illustrations, rule system is simple and just overall has a fantastic quality in every category. Not as pricey as most rule books either. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys TTRPG or Lord Of The Rings.

Great TTRPG for everyone. Especially for Tolkien fans!
If youโre aTTRPG fan, youโll enjoy this game. If youโre a Tolkien fan, youโll enjoy the depth the authors went to create an immersive Middle-earth experience. If you like TTRPGโs and Tolkien, you wonโt be able to put the books/games down!

A beautiful book for an incredible setting
Free League really did justice to the Tolkien's iconic and beloved Lord of the Rings. The book(s) are beautifully produced; the adjustments to D&D 5e are well thought out (for example, using Cultures instead of Races), and true to Tolkien; new game mechanics make excellent Hobbit sense in supporting the sense and scope of the setting. This book has a prized place on my shelves. My only complaint, if complaint it be, is that there have not been more books from Free League for this setting in D&D 5e. For example, a monster supplement would be helpful: this book does not have any descriptions or stat blocks for monsters or key NPCs.

Such a great product from an equally great company!
We've ordered several products from Free League Publishing and haven't been disappointed with any of them. I'm going to give a general review of the company and their products here, because we ordered this book from Amazon (The LOTR Core Rules Book), but I also ordered several others from Free League's website (Alien RPG Core Rules, Colonial Marines Supplement, and the upcoming Elven Lore supplement for LOTR). The benefit from ordering on Amazon is your products come quick, in great condition, but if you order from Free League's website, a few days later, they will send you a link to a free pdf download of the book you just bought, so you don't have to wait to start learning how to play. Also, if they aren't shipping the book to you soon enough, they will refund your money without ANY hassle. I will caveat this review by admitting, I'm a D20 snob. I love the mechanics behind most of the D20 RPGs and have never really wanted to move away from them (and for this version of LOTR, you don't have to), but I was willing to try it for the right RPG product (for me it was the Alien RPG). I'm so glad I took the chance! Every product we've ordered has been better than expected in quality and fun. This company has a way of bringing the feeling you get from the books or movies and creating a perfect RPG experience that brings the same intensity and experience you get when watching or reading the series it's trying to mimic. A good example is the amount of suspense and horror that the Alien game brings to the table when you play it. Amazing! We have yet to play the LOTR game (it's a Christmas present for one of my sons), but I expect it to be just a quality and fun. Free League is not just one of my favorite RPG companies, but they're probably one of my favorite companies period. SUPER customer friendly!

It's a pretty book.
It is a gorgeous book with great art. It's worthwhile to get, I'm not joking. This book is for Dungeons and Dragons 5E, but it really just uses the main rules. Magic is hardly a thing, and that's because there aren't a lot of wizards in that world. It's a fairly gritty, and as I am going through it I think it could work fairly well as a 'Wheel of Time' RPG.

Not a stand alone game need to buy story
Great gift but we were under the impression you can play right away with just this. Nope need to buy a story also. So make sure you do that too. Didnโt ruin the birthday party tho.

Adopt LOTR deep lore into 5e rules that are well known!
If you are a Lords of the Rings fan this series adapts the 5e rules from popular Dungeons and Dragons (Wizards of the Coast) game. I find this easy to adopt and thorough. They keep adding more modules from LTOR timeline and locations and characters. Similar to how early D&D worked. This allows me to adopt to a more kid friendly and Christian world view for younger players - whereas D&D has some darker sides I prefer to avoid until kids are teens with a stronger set of values that are core and it is easier to see reality from the game and distinguish between the two.

A very nice book, an interesting if not perfect adaptation to 5E
okay so this is an adapted system, to fit the lord of the rings RPG into 5E, as a DM i actually found it quite useful but then i am used to doing enough research into a gaming system and the lore of a universe before jumping in, and have no problem teaking the rules/monsters etc to fit my players, the lack of actual magic in the system compared with 5E is jarring to compare the two directly but is fitting for the setting, the quality of this book is excellent, and even if you just enjoy the lord of the ring it might be worth a read, the maps are really nice i almost don't want to use them in a game, what i will say anyone who is thinking of getting this over the D&D beyond Digital version its worth it, i have both and was not impressed that the digital version did not integrate into the usual character creation very well and requires a lot on manual tweaking, at least at the writing of this review,

One does not simply convert The One Ring
"Oh just play The One Ring", people say! And........ yeah. You COULD do that. But what if you don't want to? What if you're running a D&D campaign, and you want something a little more low-magic than the game allows by default? What if you want evil to be a real, tangible thing in your 5e games, ever-encroaching, ever-corrupting? Sure beats the alignment axis! I don't know if I'd run Middle-Earth as a D&D game, because YES, The One Ring is probably a better fit for THAT, but as a TOOLBOX for introducing themes and concepts FROM Middle-Earth into your homebrew world? Yeah, Middle-Earth Roleplaying is a fantastic resource. That's the best way to use this, IMHO. Plus, I just really like their stripped-down NPC statblocks. Beats running every NPC as a default Commoner.
