No.It operates using residual current remaining in battery.Alternatively it can be connected to battery in conjunction with charger.I havent used mine yet.though.

Will this be ok to use while i have the battery on a trickle charger?

Yes, it will be ok. I use mine in my shed solar power lighting system which is on continual charge in day light.

can you connect positive to battery and the body neg or must it go direct to battery terminal

You would need to go to OEM as we are purchased of this item, to be absolutely sure. We connected direct to battery terminals, post 2 weeks the battery increased voltage readings and has rectified low power
