Where is the switch for the globe light?

A switch on the power cord lights up the globe lamp.

What is the globe itself (not the stand) made of?--metal or plastic?

Must be plastic, a magnet won't stick to it. It's a hard plastic. I was disappointed that the oceans are somewhat identified incorrectly. The Atlantic should be North Atlantic and South Atlantic. Same with the Pacific. Over all it's a nice globe and well detailed.

Does this need batteries?

No, it just needs to be plugged in.
