Discover a new favourite Christmas story with this modern classic, with illustrations from beloved artist Emily Sutton. When the ugly little fir tree is taken to the city, no one wants to buy him; they prefer the big tall trees. But a homeless boy asks the shopkeeper if he can take the tree, and down by the river in a cardboard box, decorated with a few candles, the tree finds itself at the centre of a magical Christmas Eve it will never forget. A heartwarming Christmas tale with a classic feel and a modern theme at its heart. “a classic in the making” – The Bookseller “A treasure to return to time and again” – Inis Reading Guide “This absolutely beautiful book will really instil the true Christmas spirit in all who read it” – Love Reading 4 Kids Review: lovely story and illustrations - such a lovely book to read to grandchildren. illustrations were beautiful and story was so enchanting Review: Lovely book very heartwarming - This book is beautiful. A bittersweet but relevant story
I read this on Christmas Eve to my 10 and 6 year old and both my girls were intrigued by the story and it raised questions. Yes, it's not the usual bells and thrills but it holds a valuable lesson whilst maintaining the magic of Christmas. It's important for children to remember that not everyone will be having the same day that we have and joy isn't just materialistic. I think this was more relevant than ever. Some people review that this would never happen as this is a child OR that homelessness would be a bleaker experience. What people have to remember is, that it needed to be a child because of the child audience/reader. A child needs to be able to relate. I wouldn't see someone complain if it was an elf who lived under a bridge. Homelessness is bleak, but when this becomes normality, little things do bring joy. This doesn't take away from the situation. It's a story with meaning, a story about being non materialistic. Ultimately, the story is bittersweet. Maybe not one for people who want bells and thrills on Christmas Eve but for those who want to educate their children on reality, without taking away any magic.

Well written, lovely illustrations, promotes empathy and compassion.
My child (age 5) and I have read this a few times during the holidays, plenty of points to raise questions and discussions. There are different themes in the book. For example, showing a little kindness to the smallest, seemingly worthless thing (the tree) can help it prosper into something beautiful. The tree counts itself lucky as others (the boy) are in a worse position. Each person is of value and can contribute in the world. It is a great book if you want to convey ‘values of Christmas’ such as kindness to others, thankfulness and compassion without being religious. All this in a lovely story. The first time we read it, my little one gasped with happiness at the last page.

Hermoso
Hermoso libro.

Wonderful book.
The story is humble and somewhat treacly but that is right up my alley at Christmas time especially. The illustrations are enchanting and detailed; they pull the reader into the story. It is a comforting addition to any Christmas book collection.
