The stones and sand used in this unique pair of earrings were collected directly from Lake Michigan by the artist, and set in copper-plated pendant trays as a nod to the abundant copper deposits found in the Great Lakes region. Care was taken to showcase the materials as they appear when found. The stones were purposefully left unpolished. The sand, which darkens when wetted or glazed, was not treated to appear lighter. These earrings each contain beach sand, a piece of Leland Blue, and a piece of steamship glass, glazed in a manner to make the pieces appear wet, as if waves were lapping over them. Leland blue is the remnants of an industrial foundry glass, dumped as a waste product into Lake Michigan in the 1800's. Over 150 years in the lake has weathered this glass into beautiful and desirable pieces for collecting. Slag (or Steamship) Glass is very similar to Leland Blue, but it was produced in the boilers of 1800's steamships, and is usually green. The earrings measure 2 1/8" long, and 3/4" wide. Hooks are nickel-free surgical steel, with translucent stoppers to hold them in place. These earrings weigh 0.25 oz each, which can feel very heavy after a few hours, so for certain individuals, they may not be appropriate for all-day wear.
