Do you think it would be a good idea to spray paint the weights with Rust-Oleum??

You can do this to avoid rust caused by improperly stored sinkers. If you have not sprayed antirust paint, rinse with fresh water and dry for storage after each use. All zinc iron sinkers will rust due to corrosion from saltwater.

Anybody who bought this net, can it be used in fresh water?

It would probably serve you best in freshwater. My net barely made it through one season in saltwater before the weights rusted out.
