Q: Is this a Hardware or Software RAID card?

Hello Peter. I have not used the RAID facility on this card but on the UK Startech site it states "Supports hardware RAID 0,1, and 1+0 configured through BIOS" Please see http://uk.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/4-Port-PCI-Express-SATA-6Gbps-RAID-Controller-Card~PEXSAT34RHSo it is hardware based, you must configured it via its own BIOS that appears before your PC boots to the operating system (e.g. Windows). However, you will still need to install the driver / software within the PC operating system.It also has an additional feature "The PCIe SATA controller card supports Port Multiplier (PM), enabling multiple SATA drives to be connected to one port over a single cable" that some users could possible use for a different purpose.From the URL above the support tab on the page allows one to download the manual, specifications sheet and the latest drivers /software. ON the specs PDF it states it works with Windows 8 and 8.1 (32 and 64 bit) and there is a UK phone number should you wish to discuss with Startech further 0800 169 0408.Hope this is of help.

The PEXSAT34RH is currently tested with up to 4TB drives per port. You may be able to install higher capacity drives such as 6TB drives but the card does not support 4Kn sector drives so you need to ensure the drives you connect use 512n or 512e sectors. Matt, StarTech.com Support
