Most modern latches are narrow and adjustable - and of no use if the door is old and had a large slot for the latch. This latch is old school and fits perfectly on an old door, needing a long plate and wide latch mechanism.

This is the nearest I could get to a replacement for the flat mortice latches which have been in my house for 30 years and are no longer made as the original company who made them went bust a long time ago. Ideally I would have liked a latch with a backset of 50mm but these are just not available anywhere. However just by making the hole for the spindle a bit wider I was able to use this latch to do the job, with minimum effort. It is a life saver as it avoided a lot more grief in adapting the old doors to modern tubular latches. I am very pleased with it.
