a fascinating portrayal of prostitution in the early 1980's
This film offers a fascinating look at the life of a group of women, in their 20's and 30's, who work as prostitutes. The setting is late 1970's / early 1980's Britain, and the film certainly captures a "feeling" of the time - especially in terms of styles of dress, hair, and the cars used. These women try their best to earn sufficient money to pay the bills and provide a home for their children. Either standing on the streets, or working in parlors, these women are forced to sell themselves to 'get by'. The film focuses on one particular woman who seeks to develop her prospects by moving to London. And we experience the journey taken, and the difficulties and problems it involves. While there's a definite story, to a large extent this is offered in a style akin to a documentary. Moreover, some of the characters are interested in the sociological issues involved with prostitution, especially criminological concerns - and this results in, at times, complex discussions within the terrain of sociology (such as the distinction between functionalism and phenomenology). While such discussions are interesting, they do somewhat detract from the overall pace of the film. As such, it's quite slow going. And the general lack of a musical score does result in a somewhat amateurish production. This is not a film involving titillation. Yes, there's nudity and some sex scenes. Yet these scenes are not intended to be raunchy. Rather, they're offered as a realistic portrayal of life. I recommend this film to anyone interested in a depiction of prostitution some 35 years ago. The acting is good - so much so that one can imaging that this is a real documentary. The production is somewhat low quality, and appears rather dated. The BFI DVD edition is quite deluxe, and comes with a detailed booklet that explores the various production aspects of the film. At about £8 this is a bargain.

Good money - but unfortunately, that's not all...
This film is gloriously comic, and quite a period piece - the early 80s motor cars are amazing. The working girls are shown sympathetically as down to earth, seeing their work as a job like any other but one that offers flexible hours and even a career structure. Good money awaits in London, but unfortunately, that's not all...

Dull, pointless and utterly boring
The most boring film I have ever seen. Apart from an early scene in a massage parlour wherein a decidedly rotund masseuse gives a client a little manual attention, and a short scene later on featuring two very bored-looking lesbians, it's a deadly dull and dismal affair from start to finish. Totally devoid of artistic merit, it's quite possibly the worst film in the history of world cinema.
