what is the recommended spacing?

I have placed mine approx 5 cm apart. I don't think there would be specific recommended spacing. Just common sense is needed. Mark your surface with a pencil line first because when they stick they really stick, which is what you want.

I have them on now for some time and they look pretty much like new. Although there is some usage shown because I put hot pans on, but now more than you would have with real rods.
