The Moonstone Paperback – 6 January 2016

I have been wanting to read this novel for a long time and saw this beautiful 150th Anniversary Edition by the Detective Club Crime Classics, but buyer beware of this edition. Although the dust jacket is beautifully designed and it says it's the 150th Anniversary Edition, it's an ABRIDGED version. Though it only says so on the inside flap, which of course, they don't indicate online before you buy it. It's a real pity too because it looks great on a bookshelf, but isn't the full-length novel that I was wanting to read. Be careful of classic editions that are in the public domain of not being the complete novel by certain publishers. I guess stick with the well known scholarly editions by Penguin and Oxford for the classic unabridged versions. Just wish, however, they'd start designing better covers to really showcase these novel's true greatness. I'm getting tired of blank, floral wallpaper book covers. At least try a little harder to make the book look interesting and look good on a bookshelf. Yes! I'm sorry, I have been known to judge a book by its cover. LOL

One of the greatest mysteries.

This specific version with a yellow background cover, vertical title and horizontal author name is unreadable on my text-based Kindle. The type is tiny; its size can't be changed; the text spreads completely across the screen and is cut off at the edges. There doesn't appear to be any way to change the type size. It's not "actual page numbers" it's actual book pages presented as a graphic. I've not seen this kind of formatting in any Kindle book I've ever bought before. Returned it within minutes of receiving it to try another version.

This version reads as if it was translated out of English into another language and then back into English using a desktop translator. It renders much of the story incomprehenisible. The free versions available are actually better quality.The Moonstone itself is a good (if not great) book and worth a read, just get a different version.

So good, I am sending a copy to a friend who has bern recently bereaved….it has the capacity to divert her mind from her grief for a few precious hours..
