The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden is one of those thrillers that grabs you from the first page and keeps you thinking about it long after you finish. I felt like I was stepping into a world full of mystery and suspense that made me want to keep reading. This book has everything a good thriller should have; mind games, creepy characters and twists that keep you guessing. Just when I thought I had figured things out, the story took another shocking turn that kept me glued to the pages. The main character Millie is a young woman who’s just out of prison and in need of a fresh start. She’s struggling to get by until she gets a job as a live-in maid for the Winchester family. But soon, she realizes that this isn’t the perfect job it seemed to be. Nina, her new boss, is friendly one minute and strange the next and there’s something unsettling about the whole house. The author does an amazing job of creating a creepy atmosphere; Nina’s odd behaviour, the attic room where Millie has to stay with a lock on the outside and the strange way Nina’s daughter acts all made me feel the tension building. I also loved (and sometimes hated) how I never fully trusted any of the characters. They all have something to hide, including Millie herself. Her interactions with the landscaper Enzo and *not so* charming Andrew Winchester kept things interesting and intense. I could feel Millie’s fear and isolation as things got stranger and scarier. And then there are the twists! Every time I thought I knew what was going on, McFadden surprised me again. The last part of the book was especially exciting it felt like a fast race to the end, full of surprises that blew me away. The ending was beyond satisfying, one of those “wow” moments that makes you think about the book long after you’ve finished. Overall, I’d give The Housemaid five stars. It’s a thrilling, page-turning story that kept me up late and left me wanting more. If you’re a fan of thrillers full of mystery, tension, and big twists, you should definitely read this. Frieda McFadden has gained a new fan in me, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Certain twists though effective felt reliant on familiar genre tropes, making parts of the narrative slightly predictable. At times....the emphasis on shock value overshadowed the psychological exploration. I love this author. She is a physician who writes terrific stories with amazing twists. The book never lets you get bored, and you want to finish it in one go. The book cover was okay, and could have been made more mysterious. Overall, I rate it 4.5.

She lands a housemaid's job at the Winchester's, where she's forced to live out of a no-window attic room, follow orders from a maniac boss, put up with her tantrum-throwing kid, and battle with her growing attraction for Andrew, Nina's husband. The book introduces the reader to a whole horde of characters that evolve in surprising ways. The characters are quite compelling and believable, ranging from being annoying to creepy to irrational to reckless. A good thriller thrives on the tension created by characters who blur the lines between good and bad, and this book does not disappoint in challenging readers' presumptions, if any. The plot leads readers to an alluring suspense without divulging too much. It follows two separate narratives - one of Nina Winchester and other that of Millie and this tactic proves to be a strong choice, exposing the inner workings of the characters' minds. The gradually rising tempo of the plot keeps the readers hooked until the last page and it sure does its part to put this book on the page-turners' list. But the coincidences that line the events are too unreal and bit too convenient and thus unconvincing. The ending was pretty predictable too and that took away most of the thrill the novel manages to create since the start. The eerie atmosphere that pervades through the most part is quite as captivating as the plot itself, and works really well to build the tension and amplify it keeping readers engaged. The end is a bit of a downer, especially, the core premise to keep the series going, is terribly far-fetched. Despite minor disappointments, the novel succeeds in keeping the readers desperate for the upcoming novels in the series. The Housemaid is a psychological thriller that's dark, creepy, with complicated characters, a twisted tale, and gobs of twists and turns to keep one engaged. I just read the book and it was amazing to turn page after page as it was so gripping and unthinkable.It had surprise elements and outstanding writing .

Loved this one. I enjoyed seeing all the different perspectives and how the plot unfolded. The suspense and unease was consistent and the short chapters made this incredibly easy to read. Couldn't put it down. Loved it. I look forward to reading more in the series!

This is certainly an addictive thriller, I couldn't put it down until I had read it all! Thoroughly recommend it, a good vacation book!

Não conseguia parar de ler. O enredo é excelente, embora previsível. O que mais me surpreendeu foi o final. Valeu a pena.

Un suspense très prenant avec beaucoup de coups de théâtre qui changent totalement l’optique de l’histoire. Sur la fin, cela devient assez grandguignolesque et pas très crédible mais cela n’ôte en rien l’intérêt du récit et l’on a hâte de savoir comment Millie (the housemaid) va se sortir d’affaire. Je vais lire le tome suivant en espérant qu’il sera à la hauteur de celui-ci.

English is a second language for me.However, once you start, you can't stop flipping pages. I was so engrossed on my commuter train I missed my station more than several times.Can't help wishing Millie just a peaceful quiet life.
