SBD Dauntless Units of World War 2 (Osprey Combat Aircraft 10)

The Osprey Combat Aircraft Series is very informative text, good color plates and aircraft detail. Recommended for aircraft modelers or students of Combat aircraft.

Excellent short format description of the WW II Dauntless units' accomplishments. It would have been nice to see an image or two of OPERATION LEADER Dauntlesses, but over all, a nicely done little book.

Having a few of the author’s other works, I already had elevated expectations for this book when I ordered it. While it did not have the specific information I was looking for, it is still a great addition to my library and gives some new insight to an aircraft type that holds a special significance to my family.

It was written as if one was there rather than an exercise in academics. Puts you in the cockpit!

Very well written. Got a lot of information. I have much more respect for the plane. A good one! Ofcourse, the flight crews were tops.

Excellent job by a great author

There were several moments of air to air combat with the SBD and Japanese naval aircraft during the War and I would have liked to see more details about those encounters. Otherwise, lot of information about this incredibly important WWII workhorse, pretty good book .

I enjoyed Mr. Tillman's book, but as an aviation "techno-nut" was a bit disappointed with this book's overall short length. I suppose that's the problem with this sort of work: it's an excellent introduction to the subject with plenty of supporting details, but for hardcore readers such as myself who want all the bureau numbers of the a/c involved, we always scream for more in depth coverage no matter what. Despite appearing to damn this book with faint praise, I do recommend it highly to anyone who wants to know more about the development, deployment, and history of the venerable SBD. Mr. Tillman's experience in refurbishing an SBD years ago gives his writing a weight not always found in this sort of work, and his use of primary sources was very well done. In fact, this is mainly why I was upset with the shortness of this book: what he did write was so good, I wanted more.

日本人にとっては、憎い存在のドーントレスですが、二人乗りの爆撃機としては、大好きな機体です。特に際立った性能ではないですが、開戦から終戦まで、実によく働いた機体です。 警察官に例えると、キャリアでもエリートでもないけれど、現場で、市民の為に、一日中走り回ってくれてるおまわりさん、といったところでしょうか。 日本の九十九艦爆と空中戦をした、など、あまり知らなかったことも記載されていて、勉強になりました。

タイトルの内容での評価なので、誤解しないでください。あくまで、模型製作用の資料としての評価です。 写真、図面の掲載を期待していましたが、この本は読み物としての価値はあると思いますが役にはたちませんでした。時間があるときに、ゆっくり読めればと思います。
