Here's my OPITION on the Suunto Vertical
I just sold my Garmin Delta Solar with Ballistics, so my compair will be against that. The good bad and ugly, I've owned about 5 different Suunto's in the past and for me I like the simplicity of them. The Vertical is a step above those now. A touch screen and for me it's not a big seller, more of a oh I forgot it has that. It take a bit to understand the menu's and how to navigate them. A bit of grrrr with trying how to back out of a few of the interfaces, but thats about it. Some people have complained about being laggy, I haven't notice any of that quite yet, but I did also get a update when first configured. It's very very light, almost don't know I'm wearing it, and being such a large face thats a plus. Battery lifes seems pretty good, I wore it two days and used about 5% a day, I turned off Notifcations, but when enabled worked just prefect. On thing I did notice is the weather alert, that was always something I liked about the Suunto. I enabled storm warning, but yesterday we had a storm roll in the late afternoon and I did not get a storm warning, so that has my attention to see if it happens again. I haven't used much of the other apps yet but will test the gps in the next few days to make sure that's working correctly. I do like they include actual maps that you can download to your watch now and in color. I wish they allowed users to modify the watch faces, there are things that I want and others I don't. They have a bunch to choose from but just not what I wanted. For context I just sold a Garmin Tactix Delta with Ballistics. I really liked that one, but battery didn't quite meetup to what was promised, even with the solar and I didn't really have alot of battery draining process running. It lasted maybe a week or 5 days. Really good watch but the face was a bit to crowded and I'm older and eyes just can't see that small anymore. I still think these are way over prices for a basiclly a smart watch, but will probably come down at some point in the future. Bottem line, I think it's worth the purchase and if you are out and about there are tons of apps for those hobbies. Biggest disappointment beside not being able to configure the watch face is the wonky charger, it's about 1ft and wire thin, one tug and it's probably going to break.

Suunto stepped up on this model
Suunto stepped it up on this model. Iโve had 3 other Suunto watches over the past 10 years and they have always been great quality. Super comfortable on the wrists, easy to use, brightness is perfect even on the highest brightness setting isnโt too bright. Nice clear display and solid quality. I do recommend purchasing some glass face protection to help avoid breaking the main glass face. The only downside side is the wrist band is silicone and it seems like you will need to replace it within the year especially if you plan on wearing your watch full time. Last but not least buy this watch you will not be disappointed!

Great battery life, just the right fitness metrics.
Battery life is great. Excellent GPS accuracy. Heart rate accuracy is good for me as well but it varies from person to person. The watch and app has just the right metrics and nothing confusing like the Garmin watches. The screen (MIP) is easy to see.

Well, I like it.
It's a departure from the Garmin I had, so the operating of the watch takes a little to get used to. However, the display is clean and i like the features. It's also a lot lighter. It could be that my old garmin tactix was just too old, but this one is remarkably lighter. I also like the solar charging function. Pretty cool.

Some outstanding implementations, and some stumbles
This would be a really nice watch for anyone that uses route guidance extensively, but doesn't care about wrist based heart rate or maybe 24/7 wear. First the pros: * Truly awesome implementation of route guidance that is very visible. Route management and creation through the app is also implemented very well. This is the best implementation I've seen across Garmin, Polar and Coros. It captures essential information, doesn't try to put too much on the screen and has a very responsive compass. Note however that these maps are not routable - they mostly provide context when navigating. * Great design - this is a nice looking watch that isn't as big as some, but has a nice presence on the wrist. * Battery life - I found the battery life to be comparable to, if not better than the Garmin Gen 1 Enduro. Solar also seems to make a difference in battery life as well. * Features tend to be pared down relative to Garmin, but I felt they had a good grasp of what was essential on the watch, so they didn't overcomplicate things. Cons: * There are some strange inconsistencies in the UI - for instance the placement of interval settings. I had trouble finding this reliably for some reason. * There are sharp angles where the watch meets the wrist, and it isn't always comfortable -- especially at night, or when the band was tightened down. People with more flesh on their arms probably won't have an issue. * The heart rate readings (for me) were way off. There was a very specific placement on my wrist that would help, but it is not where I'd normally wear it. The watch needed to be quite snug - to the point of discomfort, which was exacerbated by the hard angular nature of the watch (see previous point). * Related to the above - Suunto only allows pairing one bluetooth heart rate sensor (I have three). It would be one thing if the OHR on the wrist worked well, but for me it did not. I typically use at least two external HR sensors - my chest strap causes bad chaffing in the very warm weather, and so I will wear a polar OH1 on my arm instead. * Sleep tracking didn't work for me, but then again I've never found a watch that was able to measure this for me. So for some people (ultrarunners come to mind), this is a watch worthy of consideration. Suunto really has produced a nice product. I think where they need to work is on the optical heart rate sensor, which is a generation or two behind both Polar and Garmin. If they fixed that, they would have a real winner, IMO. Edit: Suunto updated the firmware for the heart rate sensor in the latest quarterly update for the watch (7/2024), and now the sensor works much better.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY - FULL REVIEW AND THE NEED TO KNOWS
I recently purchased the Vertical Solar. I've been a Suunto fan for 10 years. My current Suunto Traverse can no longer accept firmware updates, and part of the Suunto app doesn't work with Traverse anymore. Let me delve into my thoughts on the Vertical Solar. I actually wore both watches side by side in several of my tests. Menu Features - One could download the Vertical Menu, but truly, it took me about 20 minutes to learn the hierarchy structure and scroll my way through. Just play around, you'll get it. Customization - I was able to figure out how to load different watch faces and customize pretty quick; upload from the Suunto app when your watch is sync's with the Suunto phone app. You can upload many different watch faces. Wristband - I do not like the Vertical wristband. It disconnects regularly and did so yesterday when I was closing the washing machine lid that the lid pull the clip pin completely out of the band. I found it and popped it back in. I would recommend going with a traditional band Charging - Unlike past Suunto watches, the Vertical charges by sitting on a charge disc. The Heart Monitor and O2 sensors are blocked when using the disc charger, so you cannot use those while charging on a hike. The charging disc slides if you attempt to charge while hiking, unlike the charge clips of the past. As charging halts the oxygen and heart monitoring activity, I wonder if this impacts mapping when charging. Battery Life - Suunta notes up to 60 days battery life. NOT HAPPENING. My first trial was to run the Vertical without the Bluetooth on. The watch charge lasted just about 10 days. With Bluetooth on, and getting all the phone notifications, it blew through battery life inside of 6 days. Solar Charging - In trial hikes, this isn't effective because unless you hike with your arm up in the air to get the sunlight, it won't see enough sunlight. If you're hiking under trees, forget it. It's a nice feature if you're taking breaks in the sun and can recharge. Oxygen Sensor - As a First Responder, I WOULD NOT rely on this O2 sensor. In all tests against medical oximeters, the Vertical O2 sensor was 5 to 6 points under. If you know this, then fine. If some First Responders saw a number of 87 or 88, they would have concerns. Heart Rate Sensor - I found the Heart Rate sensor to be pretty accurate compared to oximeter which can give you heart rate and a pulse strap. It also matched my Suunto chest strap. I give this feature a Thumbs-Up. I was gardening in 106 deg heat. While I was drinking my water and covered my head with a huge hat and wore a long sleeve shirt, the Vertical alarm went off and notified me that my heart rate of 122 was too high for weather conditions. Even though I was drinking water, I was not replacing Potasium, Magnesium and Sodium I was sweating out, and yes, I got heat exhaustion. Again, kudos to this sensor. Compass/Alt/Bio/Et All- The Compass/Alt/Bio on the Vertical matched prior Suunto watches and did well as did other features. Obviously Sleep Monitor - I have found this to be HIGHLY INACCURATE. Inputting your target sleep rate is misleading. Vertical shows Time Asleep and Time Awoke. Well, really that is the time I laid down and the time I sat up. I'm a very fidgety when I sleep and roll around most of the night. For two weeks, Vertical has recorded no REM sleep. Further, many times, it has recorded 5 - 6 hours of Deep Sleep, when, in fact, I was up all night. The breakdown on the Suunto app is not all that useful and the datasets are not good enough even for a case study. I would not rely on this feature and it should not be a prime reason to buy the Vertical. Step Counts - Generally 2,000 steps is 1 mile. My Suunto Traverse comes close to a match to my phone counter and general treadmills I use in the gym. The Vertical has been all over the map. Today, the Vertical was at 324 steps, while Suunto Traverse was at his 652 steps. Within 2 hours, Vertical was 982 while Traverse was at 3850. Around an hour later, Vertical jumped to 4240 and Traverse was at 4883 (so close) and phone was 4765. For a time, both watches were close, but then Vertical stopped counting at 5778 steps for the rest of the day while Travis went to 8323 and phone was 8144. I don't know why the Vertical stopped counting. Mapping - Vertical's mapping is good, but you quickly burn through power unless you charge while hiking. Vertical moves too much and contact is lost. Not a good design for charging and using battery backup. If you're a runner, forget it as far as I can see. I do wish Suunto would bring back the clip charging clip used on prior watches. It would allow users to charge as I do with the older Traverse and allow the O2 and Heart sensors to work. Suunto's literature here on Amazon claim the Vertical is made in Finland. It is not. Suunto was acquired by a Chinese company and the watches are made in China. The performance issues are directly related to the fact that Suunto watches are no longer made in Finland.

Great watch
This is my third watch from this manufacturer. The battery life on this new device is amazing. The operation of the watch is much easier than my past models. I haven't noticed a great amount of change for the solar function. However, I can get almost 2 weeks of battery life in between charges. Big fan!!!!

Durable, Accurate & Elegant.
The construction, durability and battery life is almost unbeatable. This is perfect for those who want a reliable GPS watch that does what is designed to do without the extra bells and whistles. Works great for sea kayaking as you can set a bearing and the offline map shows enough detail to navigate narrow channels between islands. I was able to navigate an open water crossing with many shoals in the dark and pin point my base camp witch would have been tricky using traditional methods - Also used for hiking. The flashlight function witch is just a bright screen actually comes in handy on trips and in everyday life. Made in Finland, I highly recommend
