Storymatic Classic – Creative Writing Prompts and Story Games – Storyteller Cards – Teacher Tool

So I took a writing class and the professor used this exact product as a way to start story prompts. I know it’s a game but it’s also an excellent tool for writers. I bought it myself and my family has enjoyed playing it, but I confess I’ve also used it For my personal journal writing.

This was enjoyable and creative for adults. I can see this being a good one for kids too. The instructions offer several different "games" you could play. At first this is relatively annoying but we wound up going with one that offers an opportunity to go around the room and change the story. It was interesting to see how creative everyone was and have the story change before your turn. We invented some great characters and had a few laughs.

It really is! You take out a couple of cards and you have a pretty interesting combination of characters and things they want to do, or need to do. If you need some creative spark I highly recommend getting this game as it is also fun to play within the rules they created (comes inside the box). Use it for fun, for work, for creative endeavors, and I am sure you will not be disappointed. A bit of a warning: most of the cards are geared towards writing fiction, and a small amount of them are purely fantasy/sci-fi (vampire, space alien), but that is not a problem. If you write fantasy and you draw a "Superhero" - simply change it to a e.g. knight who has amazing abilities, or magic etc. Transforming the realistic person into a fantasy setting is not hard, and the writing can begin :)

As a writer I'm always looking for something to get the creative juices flowing. This is that product that helps that along. It really does have alot of unique prompts! I dont use it as often as I should but it is really cool. A good investment.

I do like this product and I would recommend it if you're looking for a way out of your own head. I picked this up on a whim, and I like the premise of this. I went diva and use them in combination with Two Tumbleweeds writing dice, just to make things a bit more "interesting" and force me out of my habitual characters and settings. I noticed that many of these prompts were, in my opinion anyway, more prone to being "boy" oriented than "girl" oriented...I get that a chunk of that is my own bias coming into play, but it had a fair amount of cards where my initial thought is a male character, and I had to force myself to make it work for a female character (which I have to admit made things more interesting). Honestly super useful for just doing what I refer to as drabble ficlets to keep you writing when inspiration is not appearing magically, and some of those drabbles can then combine or expand in fascinating ways, but I don't think I'd like them as much without the dice to add some extra "flavor" since I'm afraid it would get a little too one dimensional. (I also like using these for fanfiction stories) The box is sturdy, and the cards are a good quality cardstock, I find them easy to read. The cards are fit in there pretty tightly, and I would appreciate a wee bit more finger space, as well as a method to 'sort' the cards you've used from the ones that haven't had a chance yet, but that's not all that hard to configure with an index card and a pair of scissors, so not going to knock it on that account! I feel like it is entertaining and worth the price, but if possible get it on a sale. Sure you 'could' make something like this yourself...but would you really, and would it be packaged nearly as well? I knocked off the star just because in my head a disproportional number of these are 'boy' type prompts, but this was created by a man, so fair play.

This was a Christmas present for our 10 year old granddaughter. She loves to create stories and had previously written a story for her class play. So we thought this might be inspirational. It was. She created 2 stories before we left her on Christmas Day.

These are great for teachers, youth group leaders, and parents. Kids can be creative in a circle, verbally telling the story or it can be a writing assignment. It makes a great progressive story. We used them as adults sitting around one night with some beverages and it was hysterical

Product not as helpful as I expected it to be. I will continue to utilize the cards to see if I get more enthusiastic about them as time goes on. I find the prompts to be generally run-of-the-mill and quite dull and dry.

Great for inspiration. Can be used for art, story telling and poetry.

Its not very descriptive, but this is a bonus, as it allows for any genre
