Re: on/off button: Are you saying the fridge should be turned off if room is less than 10c/50F? That isn't a winter temperature so it's confusing.

If the room is very cold, the condenser will shut down. That's okay for the fridge section, but it would cause the freezer area to that. You turn the compensation switch (on/off button) on to prevent that. By turning it on, you turn on an incandescent bulb that warms the interior enough to trick the condenser into coming on. Or something. That is what I gleaned from reading the seller's answer to another question. It's either very clever or a half-brained afterthought. As long as it works...
