It is a very durable tool and very useful for not burning your hands trying to open cast iron lids. Although the paint was already flaking of when delivered.

Overall, this is a decent compact sized lifter, that should fit into even smaller Dutch ovens when storing. It does seem like it is shorter than what is in several of the product photos. Total length is 8", putting your had about 4-5" from top of the lid. That may be too close for some, and caution may have to be used (that said, I have not tried it out with hot coals on the lid, so just a guess, but I think it will be OK). With the coiled handle, I assume you could leave this on the lid for quite a while before the coils would get too hot to touch, which is a plus over other handles that are a simple straight bar. Paint is a thick enamel-type, and should be fairly heat resistant. Unfortunately, my item came with a bare spot right where it will make contact with the lid, which if left could result in further chipping (see photo-- a touch up is in order).
