why does the solids container have an overwhelming fragrance??? is the grey plastic impregnated with some sort of awful 'odor guard' like trash bags?

The solids container is made of regenerated PP. It's not impregnated with anything. The odor should disappear after a short time.

is there a way to secure Boxio to the floor without the UP booster?

There are "BOXIO - FIX" to connect to the floor or "BOXIO - CLIP" to connect the BOXIO with other BOXIO BOXES.
