Canson Graduate Mixed Media Paper Pad, 11x14 in

I am OBSESSED with this particular brand of sketchbook! I am the type of person who typically does a few pages in a sketchbook, and gets upset when something doesn't look right, and then just starts again with a new one. This is immature, and gets expensive really quickly. I had this one in my stash of new ones, and I started using it, and for some reason I found that I was able to move past the imperfect drawings and keep going because the quality of the paper is so nice. First, let's talk about the size. I love this landscape format, it actually caused my brain to work a little harder to come up with interesting things to draw and make spreads from. It's compact enough that I was able to throw it into my bag and take it with me wherever I went, which helped me actually complete the whole thing. Plus, it's only 36 sheets (72 pages) so it didn't feel like it was lasting forever and gave me the dopamine hit of finally being able to finish a sketchbook. Next, paper thickness and quality. The paper is 200 gsm (for reference, standard watercolor paper is typically 300 gsm) so a bit thinner than regular watercolor paper, but the functionality is still really good as far as I am concerned. I used watercolor, water-soluble materials, oil pastels, soft pastels, graphite, ink, acrylic paint, and done collage in this thing and it holds up so well! That paper is somewhat textured, so it you are into a more smooth rendering, you may want to invest in some smoother paper (I hear the Manga version of these same Canson Graduate books is great). The buckling with this paper is minimal even though I do tend to through a BUNCH of materials at my pages. The only con that I can note is that the outside cover did start to wear from being opened and closed so much, but that's not a big deal to me. You can easily decorate the outside (i sued acrylic paint markers and varnish) and it still looks nice, but you can put stickers on. I love this sketchbook, I love that the paper is white and not cream and the rough bit of texture on it. I would highly recommend this for someone who likes more mixed media work, and I plan on buying them a lot more in the future. Great quality!

Honestly this has to be one of the best Sketchbooks I have ever owned. First of all the weight/ strength of each pages are great they handle Ink, acrylic paint, watercolors, alcohol markers, pens, oil pastels, and sharpies! I've thrown my entire collection of art supplies all in one book has been the best way to break out of a recent art funk. The color of the toned paper has brought out a better appreciation for the lighter colored pencils I have been under appreciating on the white and cream papers I've used previously. It's such an amazing feeling to be able to enjoy art again with this sketchbook! The size isn't too big or too small, the amount of 64 pages for 11 bucks is very reasonable for such a well known brand, the covers are hardy and handled sicker blasting with multiple light Modpod coatings. It fits neatly in my bag I take everywhere and it's eye catching yet nothing too gawty with the cool grey tones. 10/10 I am for sure going to be buying these again! If you're thinking about it or not sure that the colored pages will hinder you just do yourself a favor and try. Try it and see how the colors and values just pop with the toned paper. Canson is one of the bigger brands that I wish I had tried sooner when I was starting out with painting and markers do to the paper being so durable. I'm so happy to say this notebook is the same in the ways of the paper not ripping or pilling with the binding staying very in tack too. You can't really go wrong with it the price mark is amazing too! I've spent a lot of money on different sketchbooks that promised to do what this one does and couldn't dream of competing with the durable paper and bindings. Just give this one a try first 👀 💛 I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.

This is essentially a heavy card stock - definately not as thick as watercolor paper. It drinks pigment like crazy and can take the "fire" out of metallic work with a very matte appearance. It's a good practice paper for bright light pencil work on black or a very light application of wet media (like thick mica based watercolors or thicker very opaque goache). It is not archival quality by any stretch. It's low cost makes this a great option for a kid (older kids too like me) to test colors and play with the nuances of working with light colors on a black background. The price also makes this a great option for seeing if you like working on a black background before you invest a lot of money in expensive paint and high quality cotton black papers.

I gave this Canson watercolor pad to my grandson as a Christmas gift, and he’s been using it regularly for drawing and painting with his watercolors. The paper feels nice and heavy, and it holds up well to paint without feeling flimsy. Canson makes good paper across the board, and this pad is no exception. It’s solid quality and works great for a kid who enjoys painting and drawing. Overall, this is a great pad and makes a nice gift for someone getting into art or just enjoying being creative.

I have finally found a reasonably priced hard cover sketchbook/journal with decent quality paper. I wouldn’t load it down with too many heavy layers but for marker, watercolor or one coat of acrylic, it’s great. No bleeding, nice mid-weight paper. I will definitely buy again.

This is a gorgeous sketchbook. I chose it to practice in and see if it’s something I’d like to order for some of my students next year (I teach high school art). Pros: as with other Canson products, this sketchbook is well-made and will hold up through rough handling. Love the elastic closure and the ribbon bookmark. Paper is thick and sturdy with a little bit of tooth. Cons: I really had hoped it would do better about not bleeding through, but if you use Sharpies or alcohol ink markers, it does bleed through. I was hoping the students could do full spreads but since money is a little tight, Sharpies are really the only alcohol markers I can get for my kids, and they bleed through. Too bad. I know that’s mostly unavoidable but I still had my hopes up for this notebook. EDIT: After using this sketchbook more, I’m a little disappointed in the overall construction. As you can see in my second photo, the pages are starting to separate from the binding. It seems to be holding up, but I really wish this was a little sturdier. That is why I’m taking 2 stars.

La marca lo dice todo, papel de calidad!!

I primarily use this with Posca pens, and it does a wonderful job. There is still very fine paper pull but it’s almost unnoticeable compared to other mixed media pads I’ve used. Also wonderful that they offer the different colours in this weight.

Bon carnet, super rapport qualité/prix (9€80 au jour de l'achat et de cet avis), papier bien blanc, finement texturé, va bien pour le graphite, le bic, le stylo plume, les pastels à la cire et les crayons de couleur. Le papier est assez épais pour qu’on puisse utiliser un stylet, mais avec modération, surtout si vous voulez dessiner sur les deux faces car ça se remarque sur l’autre face. On peut aussi utiliser de l'aquarelle à condition de ne pas le noyer, il absorbe juste ce qu'il faut et permet des lavis, des glacis et même un peu de mouillé sur mouillé si on travaille assez vite. Par son format (je l’ai en version paysage mais aussi portrait) et son papier polyvalent, je trouve ce carnet parfait pour le nature sketching et le carnet de voyage, quand on dessine beaucoup et qu'on n'a pas les moyens de se payer des carnets de marque qui valent un rein et demi. Il compte 72 pages donc 36 feuilles, il s’ouvre bien à plat, il est pourvu d’un ruban marque page, d’un élastique de fermeture, et d’une poche en soufflet à la fin.
