Yes. There is a separate valve on the pillow to inflate it.

How do you check for leaks?

Applying a soapy sponge to the surface of a fully inflated mattress is the best approach to find a leak. Look out for any spots where bubbles start to appear and grow because that could mean a leak. As an alternative, you can completely inflate the mattress and wait for the sound of air exiting.

Is there a knack to inflating? A number of minutes in and nothing is happening

Mine is inflated in a couple of minutes tops, even by mouth... Sounds like you haven't got the valve inserted? Two pieces to it, first piece allows inflation, then a plug to seal... then remove both parts to deflate... Hope you get it sorted, mines been fantastic!
