Written in 1927, Cross' book is the story of Dolly Copp, who settled in Pinkham Notch in the 1840's. Dolly's husband, Hayes Dodifer Copp, built their farmhouse to provide lodging and meals to travelers going north to Gorham and Randolph. About her husband, Dolly is famous saying "Hayes is well enough. But fifty years is long enough for a woman to live with any man.” George N.
