Seagate Momentus 500GB SATA 2.5 inch Internal Hard Drive OEM, 5400RPM 8MB Cache, Sony Playstation PS3 Compatible

I have a 60 gig ps3 and it quickly got full, as each game played created a large file. Games such as oblivion and fallout create data files of about 5 gig. I decided to get a replacement drive, 500gb drive (465 actual capacity due to conversions from bytes to gigabytes). I was unsure whether to go for Seagate or Western Digital, both are reputable and reliable hard drive manufactures, and specification there are very similar (noise, vibration etc) so a coin toss would suffice in deciding between them. I based my decision on pretty much the fact that it was slightly cheaper then WD hard drive and carries a 5 year warranty rather then Western Digital 3 year. Also the fact that most models of the PS3 use Seagate hard drives. There has been mixed responses of how easy people found it to replace the hard drive. I personally didn't find it easy at all. The principle of doing it is straightforward. But on accessing the hard drive compartment your met with brutally tight screws. The screws are so tight that it is extremely easy to round the screw heads off, the frustration is immense (it seems that the screws are made from a slightly more rigid form of bluetac). A tip is to initially buy a screwdriver with a large handle (approx size phillips head no.0) if the unforgiving screws still don't want to release the hard drive you can do what i was forced to do. Carefully get pair of pliers tightly grip and twist the screw (lefty loosy, righty tighty :O) until you hear a quite loud crack (don't worry its not the hard drive) which signifies the screws releasing the hard drive. Once the new hard drive is slid into the compartment put the screws back in, it is not necessary to have them tight, just need them to effectively secure the hard drive and prevent it moving.

I bought this 500GB drive to replace the functioning but full 160GB Samsung unit in my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. I had never done this before and was a bit apprehensive, so I thought I'd share my experience. First I slotted the Seagate drive into a Lupo 2.5" SATA usb caddy (£4.99 from Amazon) and did a full NTFS format, partly to be reassured that there were no errors or bad sectors on the disk. I then installed Seagate's Discwizard software, easily downloaded free on the internet, intending to clone the original drive onto the new drive in the caddy. Here I hit a problem. Discwizard reported that there were no Seagate or Maxtor drives on the system and therefore refused to run. The reason for this, I think, is that Windows saw the caddy as a "Generic External USB device" and couldn't identify the drive inside it. Anyway after much searching I came across a thread in a Seagate forum which gave a workaround for the problem, i.e. when the error message comes up, hold down Alt and type t and o, then click OK and the programme runs. From here on it was plain sailing, just choose Clone Disk from the Tools menu and follow the instructions. The cloning of the drive, old to new, took around 3 hours, and it copied all the partitions including Dell's "Media Direct." When this was complete it only remained to remove the old drive and replace it with the new one. The laptop then booted up normally, although there was a short-lived glitch when my version of Windows 7 was thought to be non-genuine, but this soon disappeared and all now seems to be well. Of course the durability of the new drive is yet to be proven, but during its time in the thin aluminium caddy it was quiet and got only slightly warm, and my impression in the laptop is that it seems quicker than the old one. I don't know why this should be so, as they are both 5400 rpm drives, but I'm not complaining.

I'm happy enough with this seagate hard drive. I purchased it to upgrade my 60 gb hard drive on my PS3, I now have acres of space on my Ps3 to download any games/expansions without being constrained by a lack of available space. The process itself to change the hard drive on the pS3 was simplicity itself. Simply a case of removing a little black flap,one blue screw,sliding the h/drive to one side extracting it from the ps3 and swapping the old h/d with the new one in the h/d caddy. You will require a PZ0 or a PH0 screwdiver to undo the small screws properly without stripping them. Once the new drive is properly in place and you start up the PS3 the machine automatically detects it and offers to format it for you. I then copied across all my saved games and files from an external hard drive that I'd backed up my data to and then I was away. The reason why I'm withholding a star is because this hard drive doesn't seem to function particularly well with BBCi Player. There is distortion on playback that wasn't existent on the original drive. Beyond that the drive is working well and offers me all the space I require for gaming, which is what I primarily intended it for.

When it comes down to it there are basically two "budget" manufacturers to chose from when replacing your PS3's HDD, Western Digital and Seagate. Performance and reliability wise there is literally nothing between them, both have their share of "bad batches", but then the life span of ANY HDD is basically an unknown quantity. My advice when selecting a replacement HDD is to first have a look at the one already in your system and buy a direct upgrade to that make and model (Sony have used a few different manufacturers). The write speed used is generally 5400rpm and frankly going for 7200rpm will make no discernible difference and could in fact be detrimental to performance, but it is a personal choice, as is the storage capacity. Replacing your HDD is a fairly straight forward operation, although some systems have a slight problem with over tightened and "soft" caddy screws (the small Philips head screws that hold the HDD into the PS3's caddy). Be sure to use an appropriate sized screwdriver for the job. If you strip the heads of the screws you'll still be able to remove them with careful plier work, but it's best not to get yourself into that situation in the first place. Remember not to over tighten when replacing them. Make sure to back up your content on an external HDD using the systems back up data utility (be prepared for a wait, It took me an evening to transfer 60GB). In summary I have found the Seagate Momentus 500GB 5400RPM to be: - Quiet - Great value for money - Ample storage - Reliable (fingers crossed) All in all, a worthwhile upgrade.

There are many excellent reviews already on this page, and I found the content here very helpful. After checking many forums and review sites, I like many others came to the same conclusion. The Seagate Momentus in 500GB is the ideal upgrade for a Playstation 3 (80GB FAT PS3). It was simple to install (there are some great video guides on how to do this on youtube) less than 10 minutes (+ ps3 restore time). I needed the following, - Hard Drive with a 32GB partition formatted in 32GB - for backup of PS3 save files and some downloaded content (all downloaded content can be retrieved after install on Playstation Store anyway) used the backup facility on PS3 to complete this prior to Seagate arrival. - The latest Playstation update (3.5 or later) on a thumb drive (4GB was sufficient, has to be stored in a folder called UPGRADE inside a folder called PS3) - my install required this. - A USB caddy for the old PS3 drive - I use this as a backup drive. - New Philips PH1 screwdriver - I bought one but the screw holding the drive was easy to remove. Maybe they put better screws on the newer models. A lot of people have mentioned on the forums that this screw is hard to remove so I bought one...lol..the power of reviews, scary. This was a simple, and has proven to be a great upgrade. Throughly recommended.

I got this for upgrading my old Fat PS3 40gb. It was easy to fit and with instructions of the web I got my ps3 upgraded and the hard drive is working fine and I have 412gb free space. You need a flash drive and use this with your laptop or computer, then go to the Sony PlayStation website and download the latest update, you will need to create a new folder on the flash drive named PS3 in caps then open the new folder and create new folder inside and rename it UPDATE in caps, then save the update from the website inside the UPDATE folder. If you have any save data you want to keep put this on a flash drive as normal. If you are fitting one of these hard drive to a Fat 40gb PS3 follow these instructions. 1 turn your PS3 off and remove all leads, then put console on a table or floor to work on. 2 unclipped the hard drive cover at end of the console. 3 remove the blue screw from hard drive case then pull out hard drive in it's case. 4 remove the 4 screws holding hard drive in it's case. 5 remove the hard drive and put new hard drive in reversing steps 4, 3 and 2. 6 plug all the leads back into the console. 7 plug in your flash drive with the update on it, and plug your controller in. 8 turn on the console with the on button on the front of the console and hold the button down for several seconds until you hear a beep. 9 then follow the onscreen instructions. 10 the console will format the new hard drive for you and install the update from your flash drive. You will have to reinstall your game data from your current games, and then set up your internet conection so you can use your original user name to reconnect back to the PSN, then you can sync your trophy info. This can take about 3 hours depending on how many games you want to install and updates depending on your internet speeds. I completly stripped my console aswell to clean all the dust out as my console is about 4 years old. If you want to do this make sure you remember where you have taken the screws out from and take pictures of every section you do, and be carefull not to damage anything. Stripping the console took about 1 hour.

Bought this as a replacement hard drive in a laptop since it broke. The packaging looked a bit big but it had foam inserts to protect the hard drive so i can't complain there. It came in a little anti-static bag as well. Fits perfectly in the laptop as expected and worked instantly. Installed windows onto it without a fuss and now the laptop is back up and running. Nothing bad to say, it works, good price for 500gb, good packaging. Will have to wait for long term reliability but that's something i'm not worried about. Definitely worth the money and a great replacement.

The hard drive arrived packaged in bubble wrap and an anti-static bag as you would expect, on opening it was obvious the hard drive was well used. There were small dents in the case and some light scratches. The date code on the label confirmed that the drive was manufactured in December 2010, I’d prefer not to pay for a 12 year old hard drive that will be on its last legs!

Die Seagate ST9500325AS Momentus 500GB FP (5400rpm, SATA 3Gb/s, 8MB) habe ich Mai 2013 gekauft, weil die Festplatte von meinem ASUS X70A Notebook leider signalisiert hatte, dass sie ausgetauscht werden muss. Zum Glück konnte ich alle Daten noch rechtzeitig sichern, bevor nichts mehr ging. Der Einbau der Seagate gestaltete sich völlig problemlos, ebenso die Installation des Betriebssystems. Alle Programme und Funktionen konnten wieder hergestellt werden. Sie läuft schnell und angenehm leise und das seit 2,5 Jahren. Ich bin sehr zufrieden und deshalb von mir 5 Sterne und eine absolute Kaufempfehlung für dieses Produkt. Es sollte allerdings auf den Preis geachtet werden, der sich zwischenzeitlich fast verdoppelt hat.

I bought this drive as a cheap improvement to my PS3 (was a TOSHIBA 160GB SATA 5400) and it's great so far! The PS3 backup process took an entire day, literally 10+ hours, but the installation was a snap and the drive works like a charm. Though it's a 5400, it's still a snappy drive and loading times differ from a 7200 by mere seconds per application. It runs so quietly in my system that the silence in some movies is as deafening as it should be :) Now to play all those games I couldn't fit on my old drive! :D

So I received this HDD yesterday as a replacement for my 160GB Slim. I marked the rating as a 4 for two reasons. 1 because I just installed it I want to give it some more time before I give it a perfect 5 and that the packaging was a bit laxed In my opinion. It just came wrapped in thin bubble wrap in the silver type enclosed bag most hard drives come in with some air pouches inside. I was expecting a box or at least it tied down in the box so it could not move around. As for the HDD itself so far it's working just fine after installing it. If you have never replaced your HDD in your PS3 Slim it was a very easy process. This is a 500GB HDD that equates to 465GB once installed due to how the system reads it. After the PS3 takes up its own internal space you are left with 412GB for games etc. But that now pure space you have left to use up where a 160GB PS3 left me with about 112GB give or take. As far as the install it was very easy into the PS3 slim, in my opinion even easier than the old Fat PS3. However new to the slims is once you replace the HDD make sure you have the latest PS3 System update ready to go on a USB drive or else you will not be able to restart your PS3 and sign on to do your restore of data that you backed up. It seems fast, very quiet so far and in about a month I will update once I it's been used for a little bit. The Price is great for this HDD which I saw for about $20 more a few other places. UPDATE 20 June 2013- So its been about 7 months since I installed this HDD on my PS3 and it runs like a champ. Still have close to 300GB of space after Downloading many games from PS+ instant game collection. Its very quiet and has never once had any issues. I would highly reccommend this drive to anyone looking for an upgrade.
