AMAZING!! Worth the money
This review is only regarding how it works on hardwood floors. Wow, I absolutely love this vacuum! I dragged my feet on buying it because of the price but I am so happy I did. I love the green light that shows everything on the floors, you really can’t see with your naked eyes what thing will show you. I have 3 dogs and they shed a lot! I would sweep with a rubber broom and then go over it all again with a dry swifter pet pad and come up with huge piles twice a week. Today was the first time I tried this vacuum and I didn’t sweep first, just tried this and it was way better! It did the job of the broom and swifter put together but even cleaner. I no longer have to use those tools, I can just use this one. However, the battery life is pretty short, even on Auto and it didn’t get me through the whole house without having to stop and recharge a couple of times. AND that was only using it on my hardwood floors, it was completely dead and could not use it on my rugs. My house is 1997 square feet and most of it is hardwood so that is a large area to cover but I would still hope for a battery that could do it all in one cleaning after spending this much money. I did not mount the battery, I just plug it in a wall and leave on my laundry room shelf. Seemed like a waste to mount it when the actual vacuum doesn’t need to be attached to it just to charge the battery. Plus you feed the cord into the bottom of the mounting system and then have to mess with it if it comes out of line. Just very easy to plug in and go without all that extra stuff. Also, I don’t find it heavy at all. I highly recommend this but maybe look into getting a backup battery if you have a large area to cover.

If you are in the market for one of these, I'd highly recommend this one.
Now that I've had this and used it for nearly 6 months, I feel safe enough to provide a review. I read way too many forums and watched way to many videos before deciding on this brand and model. We already have a regular Miele regular plug-in vacuum, which is great quality and works well, but more cumbersome than something like this. Like many others, my hope was that the convenience of a cordless stick appliance that did hard floors and carpet, would mean using it more often, which would outweigh the fact that the plug-in vacuum was more powerful. So, if I was going to spend the money, I wanted to go all the way and give it the best shot at something I'd actually enjoy using.I can tell you now that I couldn't be happier! This thing is everything the reviews said it was and everything I hoped it would be. Aside from it being purple (my wife's favorite color), my wife is just as happy with it, even though she doesn't use it, if you catch my drift. I use it at least twice a week. It's kinda funny as I usually pull it out to do a quick clean of the kitchen floor, then do the hallway, then switch to the carpet attachment, and next thing I know I'd done most of the house. The built-in wand is great too! That was a key selling point for me and it was great to realize it wasn't just a gimmick. The only thing that might have been nice is a longer wand attachment, but to be honest, I've been fine with out it.I will say I am somewhat careful with it as it is just about all plastic. I fear that one good drop on a hard floor and I'll be looking for parts. Nothing has happened, though, and with normal use (not throwing it around), it seems well built and will withstand several years or use.One recommendation is to get an after market stand. I got the one from Haturi Vacuum Stand designed for this generation of Dysons. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D8HLHN8B?ie=UTF8&th=1. That meant no holes in the wall and was easier to find a good place the put it - and change my mind if I wanted to. It's been perfect. It's in a corner, but very easy to just grab and go anytime I want. The "detect" part of this, which is the light on the fluffy hard floor attachment works great, but is a double-edged sword. You probably didn't want to know how much stuff is down there, but it does work well.Emptying is a breeze. If you have pets, meaning hair, you may have to slide the thing back and forth a couple of times to clear the canister, but not a big deal. I've also taken the canister off as well as the inner metal filter to clean it all. This is very easy to do. The hepa filter being washable is great and easy to do as well. There is a larger version out there, but honestly this thing is top heavy enough as it is, so I wouldn't recommend the larger one unless you have a specific use case, like a very large home or something. On the topic of weight, it is heavier that all the other models, so be prepared, but it isn't all that bad. I'm an average guy and really have no problem using this for the 20-30 minutes it takes to do the whole house, including stairs and couch. On Auto, the battery lasts plenty long enough too, so there wasn't a need to get a second battery.

Dyson is getting better and better
In June, 2024 I purchased a Gen5detect to replace my five year old V8. The Gen5 was expensive, but it was on sale on Amazon so I girded my lions and closed my eyes as I hit the “Proceed to Checkout” button.I am a 78 year old 4” 11” woman and my large Dyson Animal was getting just a little too heavy to use everyday.Boy what a difference! I use the Gen5 almost every single day, and love it.The Gen5 is quieter; smother and easier to handle; love the Fluffy Optic Cleaner Head, light sees every speck of dust; and love the On/Off button as opposed to the “dead man’s switch” on their other products I have owned. Easier on the hands. In Sept the ball wheels on the side of the Digital Motorbar Clean Head came off. I found replacements on Amazon, but from the looks of the part they may or may not fit the Gen5 although the description says they would. Looked like the axel on the part was broken. Went back onto Amazon and read the reviews and found several customers reporting this issue.I Logged onto the Dyson website and Chatted with a Customer Service Rep. Asked me whether or not the parts on Amazon would indeed fit the Gen5. Told the Customer Service Rep (Harpreet K) my story and asked whether it was common for the Motorbar Cleaner Head to break, and would the Amazon part fix the issue. He asked for pics of the damage. When he came back into the Chat, he validated that the part was only three months old, and indicated there was no need for me to order the replacement wheels from Amazon. He had gotten approval from his manager to send me a new Digital Motorbar to replace the broken one. GREAT!Said the part was out of stock, but as soon as it was replenished, I would receive an Email and could call Customer Service to have the new Motorbars sent to me.Waited for three weeks, and when I did not hear from Dyson, logged onto Customer Service again and chatted with another Dyson Colleague. Gave him the Cast Number given by Harpreet and asked when I could expect the new Motorbar to be in stock? The Customer Service Rep said they did not know when the part would be back in stock, and not to worry because Dyson will be replacing the product in its entirety. What! Dyson will send me a new Gen5Detect? Yes.Please box up the old vac and all its parts (Do I have a box? Yes…) and use the UPS Label in my email box to return the product. Boxed it up and took to UPS the next day. Dyson’s website said it could take as long as 15 days from the date they receive the old vacuum to send me another.Yesterday I received my new Gen5Detect via UPS less than 10 days after I returned the broken vacuum. Been using my old V8 in the interim, and what a difference.Customer reviews also spoke to not so good customer service on the Dyson Website. I did not find that to be the case. The individuals I worked with were professional, knowledgeable and able to make customerfacing decisions. They resolved the issue quickly and much to my satisfaction.I currently have a 20+ year yellow Dyson which I still use in my sewing room; a purple animal upright which I will probably give up; the very first Dyson stick 25 years ago which I was very disappointed in and returned; the V8 and now the Gen5.Edit: Well here it is October, 2025 and the wheel on the right hand side of the vac is broken. I guess i should count myself lucky as it lasted 16 mths. The machine is too expensive for it to break over and over in the same spot. Indicates poor quality control on the part of Dyson. I guess this time i will have to spend 50 dollars to replace it.

Extremely Disappointed – Same Failure on Multiple Dyson Vacuums
I have owned multiple Dyson vacuums, including a Dyson V10 and a newer model that cost over $700. On both vacuums, the exact same problem occurred: the side wheels on the motorhead broke during normal household use. This was not accidental damage. The vacuum was not dropped, abused, or misused. The wheels simply failed. For a premium product at this price point, I would expect much better durability. What is even more disappointing is Dyson's warranty support. My claim was denied because they classified the broken wheels as "wear and tear." I find that hard to accept when the same component has failed on two different Dyson vacuums. If a critical part repeatedly breaks under normal use, that suggests a design or durability issue rather than ordinary wear.Dyson products are marketed as premium, but premium pricing should come with premium durability and customer service. Spending over $700 on a vacuum only to have the motorhead wheels break and then be told it is not covered under warranty is extremely frustrating.Based on my experience, I can no longer recommend Dyson. The products perform well when they work, but the long-term durability and warranty support have not lived up to the price tag.

Introducing The GOAT Of Vacuum Cleaners
I did weeks of research before finally investing in this Dyson cordless vacuum cleaner. (It is replacing our previous Dyson, which served us well for 15 years.) That first use is always mind-boggling, when you realize that you only *thought* your previous vacuum was doing its job. It was astounding. As we've come to expect from Dyson, it comes with high-quality attachments that cover every possible need. Some are much easier to switch between than our old vacuum, which means I am using them more frequently. Especially appreciated is the smooth ability to use it in cars and on upholstery. Dyson excels at anticipating consumer needs and filling them. The slide mechanism for clearing the canister is new to us and much appreciated, as I'm not a fan of having to manually remove the debris that did not just fall out, which was frequently the case with our previous Dyson. As others have mentioned, we quickly quit paying any attention to the particle meter. Being able to switch between suction power modes is nice. I have tested and can typically vacuum the entire downstairs on Boost and then recharge to do upstairs. It should be noted that Boost mode WILL suck up lighter-weight rugs, or just become impossible to move across the surface. I switch to Auto for those or if I am finding it harder to push and pull the vacuum due to the stronger suction. Note that minimizing your use of Boost mode would also, presumably, extend the life of the battery. We've found that this model excels at picking up fine dust particles and even better, not spitting them back out.The green light has to be mentioned. I alternate between loving and hating it. It is supremely satisfying to use...on all but my 23-year old hardwood floors. Watching dust and debris vanish, and finding spots you have missed, is fun and cool. Realizing that your hardwood floors have embedded particles after years of washing and waxing is not. (It reminds of how I felt when using a blacklight on my carpet. Ewwww!) I understand now that I really need to put effort into the hardwood floors and remove the layers trapping the particles.Another improvement with this model is that Dyson has taken steps to ensure that the bars of the vacuum no longer become entangled with hair, string, etc. This is a huge and much-needed improvement. It works! The only negative I can find to report is that this model is heavy and given the design, the weight is concentrated near the handle. I was surprised to find myself with mildly sore shoulder, arm and hand muscles after my first-week vacuum spree. Now, I try to switch hands while vacuuming, but of course I prefer my dominant hand. This could be a consideration for some users. Finally, it was disappointing to learn that Dyson only warrants this model for 2 years. I'm told this is due to the expected lifespan of the rechargeable battery, but an innovative company should be able to deliver longer lasting batteries. Especially at this price point.

Would buy again
Good vacuum so far. Great for every day cleaning and collecting all the dust. The light is very helpful to see everything you don’t normally see with an average vacuum. I only recommend this product for hard floor such as wood or tile though considering even the carpet attachment it comes with will not properly go over any of my rugs/carpet. Its very lightweight, easy and to hide in the closet with the size, and overall does a very nice job.

Dyson Gen5 Detect Review — Truly Next-Level Performance
This is my second Dyson, and all I can say is, it’s amazing. The Gen5 Detect is an absolute beast. The suction is phenomenal, the cleaning performance is unmatched, and overall it feels like a major leap forward from my already excellent Dyson V10.I owned the V10 for about seven years with zero issues, so when it finally came time to replace it, I started shopping around. I reached out to a local vacuum store to see what they recommended, but the feedback surprised me. The salesperson had nothing good to say about Dyson and claimed their store constantly repairs them. That didn’t line up with my experience at all. Out of curiosity, I contacted about half a dozen other vacuum shops in multiple states, same story. No one recommended Dyson; they pushed Miele or the new Riccar R65, basically whatever brand they sold.Against my better judgment, I let their sales pitches and the “setup/stand” convince me to try the Riccar R65. I also didn’t want to spend over a thousand dollars since Dyson didn’t have any promotions at the time. Unfortunately, that decision ended up costing me about $500. I had repeated issues with the charging base and the multi-floor brush. I eventually got a replacement stand that resolved the charging problem, but the vacuum itself was very underwhelming. The power just wasn’t there. Having to go over the same spot multiple times to pick up debris is incredibly frustrating. Even worse, often times when I placed it back on the stand, debris would drop out of the bottom of the brush and no, the vacuum wasn’t clogged. The real eye-opener was when I tested it on the one fully carpeted room in my home. I vacuumed the carpet with the Riccar first, then ran the Gen5 Detect on Auto mode afterward. The Dyson filled one-third of the bin with debris that the Riccar didn’t/couldn’t pick up. There is simply no comparison. If you want a cordless vacuum that cleans as well, if not better, than many plug-in vacuums, buy a Dyson. It is worth the investment.

Enjoying the Product but Probably Not Buy Again
This is a great vacuum and really satisfying to use! It looks very pretty out of the box, but it soon gets dirty. It's a bit over engineered, but I guess that's the point of a Dyson. It's great that it's cordless, but something you don't think of is that as you go back and forth, you are moving the whole unit, as opposed to an attachment. It can get heavy, though the item weight is definitely manageable.
